Full-Time Roadside Environmental Engineer II
Job Description
- Assist and provide technical expertise in the gathering of engineering data, field information, and technical support required for construction of NC rest area system.
- Provide basic civil engineering functions for our Roadside Environmental Unit vertical construction projects.
- Conduct field engineering data investigations for the design, development, review, permitting, construction, maintenance, operations, or repair of, projects and their potential environmental and safety impacts.
- Provide engineering reviews of plans for completeness, compatibility, and compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes, and design needs.
- Make recommendations to senior engineers/managers on project concerns or issues.
- Prepare and review contract specifications of other engineers to meet desired compliance with engineering principles standards, codes, design, and statues.
- Provide invoice reviews and approvals for statewide rest area purchase order contracts submitted by contractors to determine acceptability for payment.
- Ensure work is done per engineering drawings and NCDOT specifications.
- Apply your engineering expertise and judgment in statewide field collection of rest area construction data based on NCDOT and FHWA guidelines.
- In conjunction with NCDOT units, private companies, and contractors, you will evaluate new technologies and methodologies for improved site design and building engineering.
- Provide specialized engineering design and judgment in every phase of rest area construction as they occur on roadway construction and rehabilitation improvement projects statewide.
- Document results of construction inspections, maintenance evaluations, review of invoices, and reporting of project activities.
- Provide responsive action to customer comments and complaints regarding improper operation and maintenance of the State’s 60 rest area facilities.
- Undertake special projects under the direction of the section engineer to resolve issues and problems involving rest areas usually in cooperation with other concerned agencies.
- Assist in meetings and periodic inspections on related projects and studies.
- Provide research reports.
- Undertake other rest area/welcome center projects.
- Experience managing professional consulting contracts with engineering firms and municipal entities, including negotiation, contract development, contract administration, and contract payment.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- Experience evaluating architectural design plans and providing recommendations to consultant architects and engineers.
- Experience communicating verbally and in writing to solve problems involving explaining engineering concepts to customers.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
