Established as a community non-profit in 1972, The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community. The mission of The Center is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities for the betterment of our entire San Diego region. The Center currently has over 75 staff working at five facilities across San Diego County.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Youth Homeless Services Manager, the Residential Counselor (P/T) will be responsible for the maintenance and awake overnight supervision of the emergency shelter component of The Center’s Programming. Additional responsibilities include providing safety and around-the-clock supervision of youth ages 18-24 staying at the shelter. This position provides for the physical, personal, and health needs of each youth by providing an atmosphere that is supportive and welcoming to all youth. This is a part-time position for an estimated 16 hours per week.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides trauma-informed services to youth
  • Provides supervision, documents incident reports, and maintains a safe and nurturing environment
  • Orders nightly meals for youth, launders shelter bedding and manages the use of shared living environment
  • Enters data, tracks outcomes, and provides feedback for continuous program improvement

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience/Education: Must demonstrate competence in working with diverse populations. Those with lived experience as a member of a historically under-low-indemnity (i.e., low-income, communities of color, LGBTQ communities, immigrant communities, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Professional Skills: Must demonstrate competence in using strength-based, trauma-informed, and positive youth development approaches in service delivery.
  • Other Skills: Must have reliable transportation, driver’s license, auto insurance, and the ability to work overnight hours. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
  • Computer/Office Equipment Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments. Must have strong proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Language Skills: English fluency is Required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and/or Experience: A minimum of one year working with LGBTQ youth, youth living with HIV, and/or youth of color is preferred.
  • Professional Skills: Experience managing crises and implementing crisis interventions are preferred. Prior experience working with youth experiencing homelessness or the foster care and juvenile dependency systems is preferred.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Compensation: The pay range for this position is $19.00 – $20.00/HR and is commensurate with experience. This is a Part-Time Regular Non-Exempt position and is not eligible for benefits.
