Full-Time Resident Engineer
Job Description
- Serve as our Asheville Resident Engineer and manage the I-26 Corridor projects and all other projects assigned to the Asheville Resident Engineer’s office.
- Supervise contract construction work.
- Establish engineering controls for contractors.
- Manage construction project inspections.
- Directly supervise 6 engineers and indirectly supervise up to 90 engineering technicians.
- Manage our project-specific testing lab for the I-26 Corridor.
- Lead our fiscal and personnel management for the unit, and all I-26 corridor projects with a budget of $1B+. T
- Work with other NCDOT department, the public, other state and federal agencies, and local government officials to provide construction information, coordination, and service delivery.
- Thorough knowledge of NCDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) policies, procedures, guidelines, and established practices and principles of transportation engineering.
- Direct experience in contract administration for Central, Division, and locally-managed projects (federal and state funded) in accordance with established state and federal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Direct management experience in the supervision, direction, management, and training of employees and contract engineering staff to achieve established project delivery metrics.
- Direct customer service experience with internal and external customers, including Division staff and management, municipal and county governments, consultants, contractors, elected officials, and the public, including resolving problems and explaining engineering concepts to customer groups.
- Management experience supervising permanent employees, contractors, and/or consultants.
- You apply a safety philosophy to all operations.
- Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including night work, heights, highway traffic and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Verbal and written communications skills to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
- Ability to supervise activities of junior staff and instruct them in proper work methods of highway and bridge construction.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
- Knowledge of HiCams and SharePoint/Plus is preferred.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and
- 5+ years of relevant experience, and
- 3+ years of supervisory experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
