Full-Time Research Associate – Hydrologist

Salary – £30,684 to £32,563
Hybrid working (50/50)
Permanent and Full-Time (part-time will be considered, minimum hours equivalent to 4 full days per week)

UKCEH is looking for a Hydrologist to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

As an organisation we are passionate about developing our staff.  This role includes a 3-year bespoke training program. Offering you the opportunity to gain additional training and development, running in parallel with the delivery of your work. Skills development could include:

  • Manipulation and visualisation of datasets
  • Understanding of hydrology and water resources
  • Programming

You’ll be joining the Water Resources Systems Group, a dedicated and progressive team of scientists, focusing on water resources management from field to global scales.  You will help apply a range of models to understand the hydrology and water quality of catchments in the UK and abroad. Developing broad hydrological expertise with a specialisation in water resources modelling. The work is varied, a mix of current and planned applied research projects, within the UK, Europe and Asia.

You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

 

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Applying a range of models under current and future scenarios
  • Data collation and analysis, preliminary research and development using R, Python or similar
  • Preparing formatted data or figures for documents or reports
  • Undertaking reviews, data collection activities, ensuring timely and consistent production of good quality data (or other digital assets / research outputs)
  • Supporting digital asset activities, including the submission of quality assured datasets to relevant data repository, publishing model code and data flow
  • Leading specific tasks within projects, demonstrating your understanding of time management in the delivery of project outcomes
  • Contributing to the production of reports and scientific papers
  • Developing and presenting your own ideas for analysis

 

For the role of Research Associate – Hydrologist we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A 2:1 degree (or above) in an appropriate subject (e.g., physical/environmental sciences, maths or engineering), equivalent qualification or sufficient relevant experience
  • Experience in one or more of GIS, Microsoft SQL server, Access databases and Excel, with an ability to programme in Python or R
  • Good IT skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office 365
  • Effective communication and teamworking skills, adopting a collaborative and inclusive approach, across various levels
  • A commitment to your own professional development, understanding the wider context of your science and its potential impacts at national and global scale

Desirable:

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas to support project activities and attend conferences
