The Research Associate will help investigate new projects and participate in the research and policy development process.

 

Who we are:

The Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) at the University of Notre Dame is a research center dedicated to reducing poverty and improving lives in the United States through evidence-based programs and policies.

 

Who we need:

The Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities at the University of Notre Dame (LEO) is currently seeking a Research Associate assisting Rob Collinson, the Wilson Family LEO Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics. This Research Associate will work on projects in public and labor economics, primarily related to housing and neighborhoods policies. They will be engaged in close collaboration with Professor Collinson and his collaborators at Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and New York University.  This position will be based out of Chicago with much of the duties being carried out at the Census Research Data Center in Chicago. *

* Candidates must undergo a background check as part of receiving Special Sworn Status (SSS) from the Census Bureau.

The Research Assistant’s responsibilities will include:

Project Management:

  • Work with Census RDC staff to meet disclosure requirements for release of results
  • Work closely with the Census Research Data Center (RDC) in Chicago to secure access to relevant datasets within the RDC
  • Work with Census Bureau to apply for Special Sworn Status (SSS), and complete required confidentiality and data stewardship trainings, as required by the Census Bureau to maintain SSS

Data Analysis:

  • Support data cleaning, and coding for research team
  • Assemble and manage data sets
  • Process and analyze administrative and survey data at the RDC
  • Support the research team in writing up results for academic articles

This is an 18-month limited term position. It is contingent on funding availability and will begin in the summer of 2021. For more information about LEO, please visit leo.nd.edu.

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is one with (i) strong coding skills, (ii) a quantitative background, (iii) an ability to problem-solve and work independently. The position may be particularly well-suited for a candidate with a long-term interest in pursuing graduate work in economics, public policy, or a related field.

Candidates from groups underrepresented in economics are especially encouraged to apply.

Required:

  • A deep commitment to the mission of both LEO and the University
  • Undergraduate degree in Economics, Mathematics, or related social science field
  • Training in econometric and statistical techniques employed in randomized evaluations
  • Statistical programming experience (STATA, R, SAS)
  • Highly organized with ability to juggle multiple demands simultaneously
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-directed, with willingness to take initiative over project tasks and explore potential evaluations

Preferred:

  • Experience working for economic researchers as a research assistant
  • Experience working for or with social service providers
