The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and the University of Missouri seek applications for a Research Assistant Professor jointly appointed to the Missouri Institute for Defense & Energy (MIDE) and Missouri University Extension (MUE). The Research Assistant Professor is the center point of horticultural research and graduate mentoring activities between the division/campuses. The position will be based on the UMKC campus with sponsored travel to the MU Columbia campus and Extension sites throughout the state.
The Research Assistant Professor position is a ranked, non-tenure track, benefit-eligible, full-time [1.0 FTE] position with option for future promotion. The contract length is 9 months starting September 1, 2021 with two-months paid summer research and eligibility for a third month.
Job Description:
- To conduct multidisciplinary research locally, nationally, and internationally to address critical sustainability gaps in urban vegetable production at the neighborhood level, with impact on “food deserts” and related missions, whose objective is to improve the quality of life of local consumers
- Mentor and co-mentor undergraduate and graduate students whose primary discipline may be from Plant Sciences, Economics, all STEM fields, the Business School, and/or Bioinformatics and related Health & Life Science disciplines through independent study, directed reading, thesis and/or dissertation courses as appropriate
- Provide leadership in multi-state regional projects, national meetings, grants, and, ultimately, publishing research results in top-tier horticultural, engineering and related journals that will enhance MU and UMKC’s status in the burgeoning field vertical farming
- Fill the critical need to train and coordinate curriculum for Field Specialists who assist Missourians seeking alternative economic and profitable agricultural opportunities
- Provide innovative methods of disseminating research information to Missouri vegetable growers as well as traditional social media, newsletters, seminars, field days, etc.
- Secure extramural funding to conduct applied horticultural research and transfer research-based finding to the public, commercial and consumer horticulture industry in Missouri
- Collaborate with faculty of MIDE, MUE, the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, and MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources for productive research, product development, patents, multi-state regional projects and co-authored publications
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Horticulture/Plant Sciences, Agriculture, Food Science or relate field
- Record of research productivity and success in securing extra mural funding
- Ability to work in rural outdoor settings and cultivate vegetation research
Salary:
- $63,000 over 9-month base, plus 2/9th of base salary guaranteed over summer.
