Full-Time Regulatory Affairs Manager
Job Description
Regulatory Affairs Manager, U.S.
Remote in metro-area Washington, DC
Mercy For Animals aims to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a just and sustainable food system. We envision a world where animals are respected, protected, and free.
As a leading farmed animal advocacy organization, we know that achieving this goal requires a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment—one that welcomes and sparks new perspectives and innovative ideas. If you are passionate about our mission, driven to make a big impact for animals, and eager to be part of a dedicated team, join us!
We currently seek a regulatory affairs manager to join our U.S. government affairs and public policy team. In this role you will innovate and execute regulatory affairs strategies that drive the development of a more just and sustainable food system. You will do so by identifying strategic opportunities for regulatory and administrative reforms at the state and federal levels of U.S. government; analyzing regulatory policies and assessing opportunities for impact; and authoring cogent petitions for rulemaking, white papers, public comments, and other technical written work products.
You will do invaluable work:
- Identify opportunities, conduct policy analyses, and develop strategies that further Mercy For Animals’ mission through regulatory and administrative policy reforms at the state and federal levels of U.S. government
- Draft administrative and rulemaking petitions, public comments, policy briefs, and other written work products to further Mercy For Animals’ public policy priorities
- Conduct outreach and engage with regulatory agencies—particularly USDA, FDA, EPA, and their state-level equivalents—to advance Mercy For Animals’ policy priorities
- Develop relationships with others engaged in regulatory affairs work, including those belonging to political organizations and associations not traditionally involved in animal protection, to inspire empathy for farmed animals
- Serve as the organization’s regulatory affairs expert, providing guidance and education on this topic to Mercy For Animals’ team members
- Ensure Mercy For Animals’ compliance with state and federal laws regarding policy advocacy
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties assigned
Your qualifications will take our U.S. government affairs and public policy team to the next level:
- At least three years’ experience in regulatory affairs (experience in the rulemaking process at a federal or state government agency required)
- Thorough understanding of rulemaking processes and strong technical writing skills
- Experience with agricultural, environmental, or animal welfare policy (preferred)
- Ability to anticipate and identify regulatory issues and assess for potential impact on farmed animals and others who are impacted by industrial animal agriculture
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and multiple projects at various stages of development using effective organizational skills and attention to detail
- High level of integrity and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with agency officials and inspire empathy for farmed animals
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time-management skills
- Ability to work on multiple issues of varying complexity at once while meeting deadlines with polished deliverables
- Exceptional technical writing and spoken communication skills, including translating complex data and policy nuance into cogent, precise, and convincing regulatory analysis and speaking about it publicly
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member
- Commitment to the mission and values of the organization
- Ability to travel within metro-area Washington, DC, using reliable transportation to attend in-person meetings about once a month
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds
- Commitment to continued personal and organizational growth in principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
