Job Description

Overview

The Utah Conservation Corps Regional Coordinator (Program Coordinator I) is responsible for supervision of UCC adult field crews and leads UCC field staff to provide seasonal trainings and logistical coordination. The Regional Coordinator provides professional leadership and technical expertise to staff and crews, ensuring that all members are adequately trained and prepared to perform high quality work in a safe environment.

 

The Regional Coordinator is expected to provide leadership in support of UCC’s overarching and crew-specific programmatic goals. Support of field crews and operations may include but will not be limited to: visiting and supporting crews at their project sites, training crew leaders and members, performing project site visits, managing logistics, maintaining tools and equipment, working in the field office, and assisting with crew member recruitment efforts.

 

This position involves frequent travel, camping and irregular hours including participating in a rotating on-call schedule. The Regional Coordinator must have strong leadership and communication skills, flexibility, capacity for self-direction, a passion for conservation work, a mature and professional demeanor, strong teamwork and collaborative skills and a desire to provide mentorship to emerging conservation leaders.

This position works under the direction of the UCC Operations Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Supervises UCC adult field crews and support staff – 45%

  • Supervises support staff, student employees and volunteers.
    • Completes written mid-term and final evaluations for all crew leaders and members.
    • Ensures compliance with UCC safety policies and procedures by issuing warnings and dismissing members from the program when necessary.
  • Oversees the day-to-day management of conservation projects in their region and throughout the state.
  • Manages single-identity crews (e.g. women’s saw, LGBTQA+, ADA Accessibility surveying, bicycle, veterans, youth, etc.) on an as needed basis to support diversity in corps operations.
  • Provides to crews technical, logistical, and administrative support with professional feedback in a structured environment.
  • Conducts regular risk management and policy audits and enters data into database for tracking purposes.
  • Serves as a role model, resource, mediator, and advisor for crews.
  • Assists Operations Coordinator & Projects and Partnerships Coordinator in scheduling.
  • Performs quality control checks on crew-collected project data, safety forms, vehicle mileage and crew project hours.

Trains field logistics technicians, crew leaders and members – 25%

  • Trains over 120 field bosses, crew leaders and crew members per year.
  • Develops lesson plans and training materials and oversees crew leader training topics, including trail maintenance & construction, proper tool use & maintenance, chainsaw, fence construction & maintenance, critical incident scenarios, outdoor leadership skills, pre-project planning & organization, conflict-resolution, debriefs & feedback.
  • Leads spring/summer/fall crew member orientation in topics including outdoor skills, expedition behavior, Leave No Trace, food & menu planning, map & compass, common backcountry medical issues, packing and fitting a backpack, food storage, hygiene, water purification, stove operation, dish washing systems.
  • Implements technical skills training for field crews, including the safe and proper use of chainsaws, crosscut saws, tool maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and white-water rafting.
  • Evaluates technical skill retention during field site visits.

Serve as liaison between project partners and UCC for efficient and effective project implementation – 20%

  • Schedules meetings with project sponsors while in the field with crews to establish clear lines of communication between UCC staff and project sponsors.
  • Schedules meetings with sponsors and potential sponsors for new and technical projects.
  • Develops and maintains Emergency Response Plans for all projects and trainings.
  • Compiles project data to create and submit reports to project partners and UCC administrative staff.
  • Attends weekly program staff meeting to report on field crews and projects.
  • Participates in yearly program staff retreats to address the program areas of strategic planning, administration of field operations, revision of policies, development of safety protocols, and revision of member training.
  • Nominates members and projects for awards at annual meeting.
  • Collaborates with UCC Leadership Team to develop and implement projects.
  • Review UCC policies & expectations.

Manage, maintain, and purchase tools and equipment – 10%

  • Supervise the development of efficient tool maintenance, storage and check out systems.
  • Research tool and equipment purchases based upon crew needs and budget.
  • Assist the operations coordinator with the purchasing of tools, equipment, group gear, and first aid supplies.
  • Report monthly on mileage tracking spreadsheet for crew vehicles so that vehicles expenses are routed to appropriate accounts.
  • Manage and maintain the physical office space for the regional office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4 years of Conservation Corps, Natural Resource field work, or equivalent experience with at least 2 years of leadership responsibilities
  • Experience supervising full-time & seasonal staff and program management
  • Ability to complete physically demanding conservation projects in remote locations with variable weather conditions
  • Knowledge of field training planning and execution along with a willingness to attend technical skills trainings
  • First Aid and CPR certified and a willingness to attend and certify as a Wilderness First Aid instructor
  • Trail building experience and the ability to create trails curriculum and train members
  • Chainsaw training and experience and the ability to qualify as B Faller
  • Job offer contingent upon a successfully passed background check
  • Experience and understanding of working within the confines of State and Federal regulations, policies and process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Responder certification
  • Trail building, layout and maintenance experience
  • Commercial pesticide applicator license
  • Chainsaw fleet management experience
  • Mapping programs and data collection experience
  • Experience with national service, conservation corps, and/or environmental education programs preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, environmental education, conservation, or a related field
