Job Description

American Conservation Experience, a non-profit conservation corps, is looking for young adults who identify as Queer who want to work on meaningful conservation projects in Grand Teton National Park in Jackson, Wyoming. This opportunity is intended for those looking to learn valuable skills for future careers in the field of conservation while immersed in a community of like-minded young professionals from around the country. Members work for 12 weeks on projects including ecological restoration, studying the effects of fire on the environment, and trail maintenance and construction, all while completing a term of AmeriCorps service.

Season runs June 20th – September 10th

Benefits:

Members will receive a Living Allowance Stipend of $400 per week, paid bi-weekly.
Members obtain an Education Award for the amount of $1678.57 for 12 weeks (450 hours) upon successful completion of service.
ACE provides members with food during all project days; corps members are responsible for providing their own food on off-days.

Members serve in professionally supervised teams as they explore future outdoor careers, learn practical field skills, and develop confidence as emerging leaders in the field of conservation. Members are afforded opportunities to learn and train under the guidance of professional mentors within ACE, while gaining invaluable career perspectives working alongside staff from the National Park Service. This crew will work with the Grand Tetons Vegetation Crew, the Trail Crew, and the Fire Effects crew.

This program is designed to provide members with hands-on, service-learning conservation opportunities that benefit public lands, while fostering their professional development. Throughout the course of the program, participants will have the opportunity to establish a connection to the National Park Service and gain skills to become the next generation of land stewards. This program has a strong focus on development of leadership skills with weekly topics to help members develop their skills and prepare for leadership roles in the future, culminating in a two-day leadership summit in August.

Field work and other duties might include but are not limited to:

Seed Collection
Plant identification
Invasive species removal
Surveying pre- and post- fire effects on vegetation
Adjusting trail corridors to make space for people using mobility devices
Members get experience working with or in conjunction with the following tools and equipment, depending on their level of training: herbicide backpack sprayers, GPS units, power tools and hand tools.

How to Apply

Qualifications:

Applicants 18-30 (or up to 35 with veterans status) who identify as Queer are eligible to apply. Applicants must be capable of performing physically demanding labor on environmental and conservation projects for 10 hours a day. Applicants should expect to hike extended distances on rough terrain carrying up to 40 lbs, and be prepared to spend 4 consecutive days in the field on each project. Summer weather at Grand Teton is quite cool and often unpredictable. Members will work in a variety of weather conditions such as temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high winds, intense sunshine, rain, and snow regardless of the month. Members should be prepared to live in communal housing with other members of the program.

Required:

U.S. Citizen or permanent resident Able and willing to work in a group Able and willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and capable of hiking moderate distances in somewhat rough terrain during inclement weather conditions Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal history check The member must be willing to represent ACE and AmeriCorps in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. ACE has a zero tolerance policy for illegal drugs and underage drinking. ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
