We currently seek a public relations manager, U.S. & Canada, to join our public engagement team. In this role you will report to the director of public relations for the United States and Canada, manage the region’s public relations campaigns, and work closely with the director to design and implement strategies that advance Mercy For Animals’ mission and goals. You will manage a team of public relations specialists and editors and oversee their work, including drafting written materials, compiling press lists and monthly reports, and working with other departments across the organization to amplify their impact through media and public relations.
You will do invaluable work:
- Execute public relations campaigns and strategies for Mercy For Animals in the United States and Canada, ensuring our messaging is consistent across all platforms
- Lead in the creation and development of communications collateral, including press releases, quotes, blog posts, op-eds, and website copy
- Assist the director of public relations in developing departmental strategies and ensure they are effective and implemented in a way that advances the organization’s mission and goals
- Oversee, guide, and mentor public relations specialists in their work, including pitching our campaigns, investigations, and videos to media outlets
- Respond to inquiries from print, radio, and television journalists
- Collaborate with managers in other departments, including development, government affairs and public policy, and corporate engagement, to meet their public relations objectives
- Ensure that all U.S. and Canadian programmatic teams follow official messaging guidelines
- Work with teams in other regions to ensure the alignment and inclusivity of U.S. and Canadian public relations strategies and priorities
- Monitor news coverage and social media outlets for issues of interest to the organization and assist with rapid-response communications
- Serve as a spokesperson and media liaison in the United States and Canada
- Manage a team of two public relations specialists and oversee workflows, including working with other departments to amplify impact through media and public relations
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties assigned
Your qualifications will take our public engagement team to the next level:
- Four years of experience in public relations, marketing, advertising, or advocacy/fundraising communications
- Experience working with or in the news-media industry, pitching the media, and establishing relationships with the press
- Experience managing or overseeing a team’s workflow
- Proficiency in The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press Stylebook standards
- Exceptional written and spoken communication skills—specifically, the ability to distill complex information into an interesting, engaging narrative
- Interest in animal welfare and farmed animal issues
- Excellent organizational and scheduling skills
- Comfort using communication and project-management tools, including Asana, Slack, Muck Rack, and Podchaser, to maintain efficient, productive, and effective workflows in the public relations department
- Ability to work collaboratively, take direction, demonstrate initiative, and represent Mercy For Animals professionally
- Familiarity with the news-media industry
- Willingness to travel one to three times a year for conferences or retreats
- Reside in either the Eastern, or Central time zone

Your team leader, Ronnika McFall, APR, is the director of public relations for the United States and Canada and has helped organizations like Mercy For Animals with public relations programs for over 10 years. Ronnika oversees the public relations, communications, and celebrity relations teams. She values practicing excellent work-life balance, prioritizing professional development, and consistently finding joy in collaboration among fellow team members. Outside Mercy For Animals, she enjoys reading; building her personal library; volunteering public relations hours; and spending time with her family, friends, and companion animal, Alpha.
Compensation and Benefits
Earn an annual salary of $65,635–$74,660, depending on qualifications, and enjoy a commute-free life as a remote team member. In addition to a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will be able to take part in our benefits package, including no- or low-cost health, vision, and dental insurance; generous paid time off and sick leave; and a 401(k) retirement plan, with a dollar-to-dollar employer match of up to 3% of your annual salary.
