REPORTS TO: Properties and Scenic Design Director

STATUS:          Full-time, exempt, seasonal

We are searching for a Properties & Special Projects Coordinator to work in developing properties and technical aspects of Lyric productions.  The Properties & Special Projects Coordinator works closely with world-renowned designers, directors, highly skilled professional stage crew, and stage management teams to primarily guide the prop elements of the production through the opening. In addition, the Properties & Special Projects Coordinator will work closely with other members of the technical department to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced repertory environment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Properties and Scenic Design Director in developing the properties design in coordination with the scenic designer for Lyric productions.
  • Act as a liaison between designers/directors and stage crew.
  • Supervisory responsibilities aligning with Lyric’s mission and vision: provide direction, oversee backstage departments; lead problem-solving efforts, and assist in supervising work notes related to productions.
  • Participate in pre-production meetings with directors and designers.
  • Research, develop, coordinate, and procure props, set dressing, and armor for shows and special events.
  • Work with the Properties and Scenic Design Director to coordinate the best use of Lyric resources, including stock and available construction and scenic art labor.
  • Track and maintain purchases against the assigned properties budget for each production.
  • Assist with interfacing between the director, designers, stage crew, and management regarding properties development and implementation.
  • Attend technical rehearsals for assigned Lyric Productions, including mainstage, Lyric Unlimited, and Ryan Opera Center productions.
  • Work with the scenic designer on Lyric productions to collaboratively solve problems before and during tech.
  • Monitor the installation and artistic integrity of productions on stage.
  • Assist with implementation of general technical elements for special projects.
  • Work with other technical department staff as needed.
  • Maintain an appropriate record-keeping system for technical documents, production archives, and production rental packets.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of stage properties techniques and period style.
  • Some design background is beneficial.
  • Basic technical production knowledge, including practical experience in shop/stage operations, scenic construction, stage rigging, painting, and lighting, is helpful.
  • Demonstrated skills in Adobe Creative and Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Vector works.
  • Experience with union crews is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and use time efficiently.
  • Must have effective organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with opera repertoire is beneficial but not required.
  • Ability to work and think independently, a motivated self-starter who also works well in a larger team.
  • Maintain a positive and calm attitude under pressure.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to remain in stationary positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to navigate uneven stage surfaces.
  • Ability to operate technical equipment and computers.
  • The position is full time mainly Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm, but at times is up to six days per week, including nights, weekends, and occasional holidays. Therefore, hours and scheduling will vary and are subject to change based on the needs of each production or project.
