Temporary PROJECT RESEARCHER: ARTIST & MUSEUM COLLECTION DATABASE
Job Description
Our project involves researching artists and architects for our soon-to-be launched online collection, exploring and learning about the works of art in our permanent collection ranging from the 19th century to the present, learning software essential to the field, working directly with our Director of Collections, and being part of a small, hands-on team.
About the institution:
Founded in 1825, the National Academy of Design (NAD) promotes art and architecture in America through exhibition and instruction. As the leading honorary society for visual artists and architects in the United States, we advocate for the arts as a tool for education, celebrate the role of artists and architects in public life, and serve as a catalyst for cultural conversations that propel society forward. As it looks ahead to its 200th anniversary in 2025, the National Academy of Design is at an especially exciting moment of reinvention and possibility. Following the sale of its buildings on New York’s Museum Mile, and the subsequent creation of a board-restricted endowment, the National Academy is refocusing on the artists and architects who are at the core of its mission and developing a vibrant schedule of exhibitions and programs that builds on the Academy’s extraordinary history to explore critical issues in contemporary art, architecture, and culture.
Responsibilities:
● Conduct online research on artists and architects from the 19th century to today – initial focus will be on contemporary artists and architects. Content includes biographies, gallery affiliations, their social media, works of art, and headshots.
● Write and edit narrative biographies for our artist and architect members that will be featured in our online collection.
● Learn and employ TMS Collections (The Museum System), a commonly used Collection Management Software for museums, to consolidate research on artists and architects and their works.
● Play an integral role in the launch of the National Academy’s permanent collection online, targeted for late summer 2021, which will provide to a global audience information on, and access to, one of the preeminent collections of American art and architecture in the world.
Qualifications:
● Talented researcher, writer, and editor with a strong interest in, and a knowledge of, Fine Art and Art History;
● Friendly, social, positive, and detail-oriented;
● A self-starter who is comfortable interacting with individuals at all levels (most work will be remote);
● Resourceful and flexible;
● Some knowledge of Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms helpful; any experience with TMS (The Museum System) a plus;
● Graduate students welcome.
Schedule:
This position starts immediately and will continue through the end of summer 2021. Candidates for this position must be able to commit to a four day per week (approximately 32 hours) work schedule, working during our regular business hours of 9:00-5:00, Monday through Friday. However, the position can be remote with the occasional trip to our Manhattan office.
Compensation:
This is a temporary, part-time position with a fixed hourly pay rate of $20.00 / hour.
Hiring Statement:
The National Academy of Design is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color, and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
