Job Description
- Manage our Geotechnical projects in Divisions 7 and 8 using private engineering firms or in-house drill crews.
- Plan and conduct subsurface investigations, including borings, soundings, and collecting soil/rock samples.
- Request testing for engineering properties from materials labs, interpret subsurface conditions, and adjust investigation on project assignments.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports containing a graphic inventory of subsurface conditions, construction recommendations, and project special provisions based on results from subsurface investigations.
- Develop scopes of work for consultants, requests for proposals, and in-house cost estimates.
- Review consultant proposals, negotiate project costs and hours, and review consultant reports/invoices.
- Attend project meetings with other units and division staff.
- Maintain unit contract documents containing direct cost rates used for each project.
- Review and provide input for revisions.
- Serve as a resource for junior engineers/geologists and provide on-the-job-training on field, office, and contract procedures/processes.
- Experience communicating complex information and instructions in written and verbal formats while maintaining effective working relationships with staff, private engineering firms, and staff from other NCDOT teams, municipalities, agencies, and the public.
- Geotechnical engineering and engineering geology knowledge of the principles relating to subsurface investigations, transportation facility design, construction, and maintenance.
- Experience planning and organizing geotechnical subsurface investigations including preparation of subsurface plans using CADD and developing technical reports.
- Project management experience establishing project scopes of work and defining work efforts in a highly variable geologic environment requiring specialized investigative techniques/equipment.
- Experience recognizing complex geotechnical problems and recommending solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Management prefers candidates registered as a Professional Engineer or a Licensed Geologist with the State of North Carolina because the role requires reviewing work performed by professional engineers and licensed geologists.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
