Full-Time Project Geological Engineer
Job Description
- Conduct complex subsurface investigations, geotechnical engineering testing, engineering evaluations, and interpretations of subsurface conditions on specific project assignments to produce subsurface conditions written/graphic inventories.
- Formulate recommendations affecting the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation facilities.
- Manage and coordinate complex consultant work.
- Prepare and review Requests for Proposals, In-house cost estimates, consultant proposals, and consultant reports.
- Serve as a resource for junior engineers and geologists.
- Provide on-the-job-training for field and office procedures, and contract processes.
- Design, plan, and schedule detailed subsurface investigations.
- Supervise 1+ field crews consisting of junior Geological Engineers and technicians performing geotechnical engineering investigations.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, construction recommendations, and project special provisions.
- Thoroughly investigate projects as detailed by engineering planning and design, geologic conditions, sound geotechnical engineering principles and judgments, and present results in a clear and concise manner.
- Manage our Geotechnical Asset Management (GAM) database.
- Participate in our Resiliency Committee meetings.
- Geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, groundwater, and the geology of North Carolina knowledge relating to design and construction techniques on transportation facilities.
- Geological engineering experience recognizing complex geotechnical problems and recommending satisfactory solutions.
- GIS mapping experience.
- Experience planning and organizing complex geotechnical subsurface investigations including the preparation of subsurface plans and technical reports, and in writing and verbally communicating complex instructions.
- Knowledge of contracting processes/procedures.
- Ability to deliver training to staff and junior geologists and engineers.
- Knowledge of NCDOT Geotechnical Engineering unit policies and procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Management prefers and we may require you to be registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Overnight travel may be required.
