Full-Time Project Environmental Scientist – Seattle, Tacoma, Redmond, Bellingham WA

Job Description

The Project Environmental Scientist is responsible for executing key activities and project-related deliverables within their discipline. As an Environmental Scientist, you will be a collaborator on multi-disciplinary teams working on public and private-sector projects in the Pacific Northwest. Typical project work involves wetland identification and mitigation, critical areas assessments, and planning and documentation to support project permitting. Routine responsibilities may include: coordination of and participation in field activities including assessment of wetlands, streams, lakes, marine nearshore environments and upland terrestrial habitats; site monitoring including vegetation, groundwater/hydrology and culverts; leading the development and submittal of environment permitting documentation; leading report writing with support from more junior staff; mentoring staff; proposal writing; project management; and client-relationship support. Participation in supporting our River Engineering team with stream habitat assessments, permitting assistance, and project management is highly encouraged. Essential duties may vary based on project.
This person will sit in our Bellingham, Seattle, Redmond, or Tacoma offices.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages projects, executing tasks such as developing scopes and budgets/proposals, contract review, client billings and progress reports, and field report and formal report technical reviews. Practices on-going and effective client and inter-team communication to ensure effective execution of multiple projects. Exhibits ownership and consistent engagement in the project’s objective.
  • Leads and/or coordinates the development and implementation of field programs. Ensures that work performed is consistent with documented methods and/or project plans and specifications and in accordance with safety guidelines for both GeoEngineers and client-specific programs.
  • Leads the development and submittals of permit application materials and supporting studies for mitigation/restoration, culvert, bridge, road, utility, parks, and commercial projects including local, state, and federal compliance.
  • Serves as a technical resource for clients and junior staff; provides guidance, mentorship and expertise to solve complex challenges.
  • Develops complete and accurate reports, figures, tables, etc.
  • Reviews deliverables produced by entry-level employees for technical accuracy including but not limited to formal reports, field reports, calculations, analyses, etc.
  • Mentors junior staff relative to technical skills, consulting best practices, safety etc. Assists in training and mentoring junior staff, developing skills in directing the technical work of others. Builds teams and shares knowledge, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Begins to work collaboratively with the NRP team on business-development activities such as identifying potential new clients, attending conferences or professional association meetings, etc.
  • Fosters a positive work environment by maintaining a respectful and supportive demeanor with colleagues, clients, and contractors. Encourage open communication and collaboration to enhance team cohesion and project success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the appropriate/assigned field.
  • 5+ years of related professional experience required.
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification, Wetland Professional In Training (WPIT), or willingness to pursue certification upon hire.
  • Experience leading environmental permitting of projects with wetland, stream and marine impacts.
  • Experience developing conceptual mitigation plans.
  • Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Professional-level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical writing skills required. Ability to clearly, objectively and accurately convey complex information to the report end-user.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • All employees are subject to completing a background check, reference check, and pre-employment physicals and drug/alcohol testing.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities and do heavy work including exerting up to 50 pounds of force on occasion.
  • Able to perform consistent work on a PC.
  • Ability to travel for short-term and long-term assignments as needed. Travel will typically not exceed 10%.
  • All employees are responsible for conducting their work in a safe manner. This includes identifying potential safety hazards and reporting them to the designated project manager in a timely manner and participating in project safety briefings. This also includes wearing appropriate safety equipment when working in the field and completing all required health & safety training prior to beginning fieldwork.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position, located in Bellingham WA and Tacoma WA, is $74,100 – $100,300 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for this position, located in Redmond WA and Seattle WA, is $78,000 – $105,600 annually. Compensation offered will be based on a variety of individual factors, including education and experience, as well as internal equity. GeoEngineers’ salary ranges are reviewed and updated each year and employees are eligible for pay increases based on individual performance. As part of our competitive total rewards package, employees in this role may also be eligible for our annual year-end bonus offering, subject to program eligibility requirements.
