Job Description

U.S. Steel team: USS-UPI, LLC, a United States Steel Company, (formerly USS-POSCO Industries) a world-class ISO certified steeling finishing facility in Pittsburg, CA.  UPI produces cold-rolled sheets, galvanized sheets, tin plate and tin-free steel from hot-rolled coils supplied by other U. S. Steel facilities. The facility services sheet and tin mill products customers, principally in the western United States. UPI’s annual production capability is approximately 1.5 million tons.

 

Position Description

Reporting to the Manager of Technology, the Project Engineer provides engineering design and project management in the execution of cost and capital projects.  Working with management and wage personnel, contractors, and engineers, the Project Engineer will utilize their technical, problem solving, and management skills in developing and implementing solutions that meet defined objectives.  The Project Engineer will develop and execute plans ranging from detailed engineering design drawings to work scope and sequencing plans to full scale project plans.

 

Essential Functions

  • Collects field measurements on equipment and infrastructure with various tools such as tape measure, total station, laser/optical level/probe, temperature probe, flowmeter, etc.
  • Performs engineering calculations and computer aided drafting (CAD) and design while incorporating data from the field, drawings/specifications when they exist, as well as targeted objectives.
  • Generates design calculations utilizing a majority of the following forms: Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Machine Design, Structural, Foundation, Fluid Dynamics, and Heat Transfer.
  • Interprets, modifies, and constructs engineered CAD drawings in a majority of the following forms: Layout and detail of mechanical components and assemblies, 2D and 3D modeling, bills of materials, piping schematics and arrangements, process flow diagrams, structural, foundation, equipment location, and general construction drawings.
  • Applies engineering and project management skills to the manufacturing process to improve efficiency (yield/productivity/consumables) or to increase capability by enabling new products or increased market share.
  • Authors and transmits technical documents to support purchasing equipment or services such as: equipment specifications, scope of requested work for an engineer or contractor, request for contractor bid, request for an equipment/material quotation.
  • Organizes and leads meetings with internal and external resources to define and solve problems, to develop and progress tasks, to collect and provide input from/to stakeholders, and to develop and execute project plans. Facilitates, listens, and documents discussion.
  • Interprets or develops project functions and targets including objectives, budget, schedule, deliverables, risk, scope, resources, procurement, and communication. Manages and controls project functions and targets in the execution of the project.

 

Experience / Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering: Mechanical, Civil, or another relevant discipline from an Accredited College.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience resembling the essential functions listed in an engineering design and industrial environment.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, crawling, twisting, balancing, climbing, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching/shoulder positions, handling bilateral/unilateral, fingering bilateral/unilateral.
  •  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include far acuity, accommodation, and depth perception. Color vision is necessary to identify color-coded materials. Good or well-corrected vision is essential working safely around moving machinery
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, exposure to dust, gas or fumes, working around moving mechanical parts, noise intensity level, and safety equipment.

Travel

This position requires occasional (less than 10%) local travel for offsite meetings.
