POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Program Manager, Family Engagement will report to the Director of Programs and will play an integral role in implementing PowerMyLearning’s program in Los Angeles and in supporting PowerMyLearning’s national work.
The Program Manager, Family Engagement will be responsible for implementing high-quality PowerMyLearning’s family workshops both virtually (locally and nationally) and in-person at our partner schools when feasible (locally). This includes managing staffing, scheduling, and outreach. The Program Manager, Family Engagement will be responsible for the families’ experience when attending PowerMyLearning workshops and will interact with a broad spectrum of constituents including K-12 students, parents, teachers, school leaders and staff, and prospective funders. The Program Manager, Family Engagement will supervise part-time staff as needed to support this effort.
Additionally, the Program Manager, Family Engagement, working under the supervision of the national Program team, will participate in the development and review of program materials for online and in-person delivery.
The Program Manager, Family Engagement will also manage PowerMyLearning’s partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library in which PowerMyLearning staff assist students after school in “Virtual (and in person) Student Zones” within select library branches. This includes recruiting, training and managing 30-40 part-time Student Zone Helpers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead PowerMyLearning Program to Yield Outstanding Results
- Build and maintain strong relationships with PowerMyLearning’s partner schools and school leaders
- Conduct all preparatory work leading to family workshops, including giving presentations to groups of families and teachers in outreach sessions and scheduling and attending partnership, logistics, and evaluation meetings with school partners
- Facilitate online family workshops
- Manage the implementation and all logistics of in-person family workshops including planning, outreach, creating staffing schedule, preparation of materials, workshop set-up, and serving as the site manager for family workshops
- Collaborate with and manage school-based project and outreach teams to ensure high workshop attendance
- Collaborate with the national Program team and cross-regional workgroups to provide subject matter expertise around family engagement, program feedback, and new ideas regarding program improvements
- Manage PowerMyLearning’s partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library, including ensuring adequate staffing and program measurement
Ensure a High-Performing Team
- Provide leadership to develop a strong culture based on PowerMyLearning’s Values. This includes managing up by being proactive and keeping supervisor informed of changing priorities.
- Lead all family workshop debrief sessions, document outcomes, manage follow-through and ensure improvements are made
- Actively solicit positive and constructive feedback from supervisor and other team members
- Actively manage part-time staff
Support Sustainability
- Help prepare for and attend meetings with funders and potential funders as needed
- Partner with other program staff to cultivate school-based PowerMyLearning champions who are excited to help the organization further its mission
- Understand and communicate PowerMyLearning’s mission to staff, partners, funders, and other stakeholders
- Gather and accurately report program data for local and national sustainability efforts
Other duties as necessary, including attendance at evening and Saturday program events as needed during the school year (approximately 12-15 times) with comp time to be used the following week. This position requires travel to school sites within Los Angeles when schools are open.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Passion for PowerMyLearning’s mission
- Bachelor’s degree
- 1-2 years of experience in program management
- Experience collaborating with team members on multiple fast-paced projects
- Proven organizational and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional project management skills, including ability to set priorities for self, team and peers, and adjust when priorities change
- Strong relationship or “people” skills, including proven experience managing relationships with highly experienced professionals
- Demonstrated experience leading large presentations and/or training sessions; strong public speaking skills
- Very detail-oriented with strong writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal oversight, but also takes direction well and is eager to meet or exceed performance goals
- Capacity to thrive under pressure while working on multiple tasks and projects
- Proficient using all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Compassion for Los Angeles’ low-income communities
- Access to reliable transportation and possession of a valid California Driver License
Preferred:
- Experience managing full- or part- time staff
- Experience working with public schools and/or districts
- Experience with educational technology
- Experience working with low-income communities
- K-12 teaching background
- Experience in event management and/or planning
