Full-Time Program Director, Faculty Development & Wellbeing

Job Description

Program Director for Faculty Development and Wellbeing leads the design and execution of a Faculty Development and Wellbeing strategy to advance faculty wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, and professional fulfillment across the Brigham. Reporting to the Vice-President, Value-Based Care, Public Policy & Administrative Operations, the Program Director for Faculty Development and Wellbeing leads the portfolio in collaboration with the designated Associate Chief Medical Officer and other leaders from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.

The Program Director provides direct supervision to a team of staff, including program managers, project managers and project coordinators. Oversight includes the management of team members in the effective execution and evaluation of the program(s), as well as supporting their professional development. They will also have the ability and expectation to handle additional staff, who may work directly on their initiatives, but have a separate direct HR reporting relationship. Direct/Indirect management responsibilities include completing or participating in the annual performance review, crafting plans for developing competencies, and providing coaching and mentorship.

The Program Director also leads the establishment and management of program/project budgets; champions the funding during the budget season; and supervises monthly actual spend.

The Program Director works as a key administrative lead for multiple programs and projects, including but not limited to faculty wellbeing, electronic health record optimization, and professional development. In this role they collaborate and coordinate efforts with staff across/within BWH/BWPO, and across Mass General Brigham. They also ensure that information flows efficiently between the project teams, the Medical Directors, and BWPO, Hospital, and Mass General Brigham Physician and Administrative leadership. In addition, they work within a matrixed organization to hold clinical and administrative teams accountable to the implementation of programs, and achievement of program goals, including assessment and adaptation of program design, measurement of performance, and influencing interpersonal leadership and strategy.

The Program Director participates in broader Brigham Care Strategies and Innovation (BCSI) work, including but not limited to mentoring peers and more junior team members; representing the BCSI team to external entities; and collaborating in the development of strategic frameworks and tools.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs, implements, and leads all aspects of large, sophisticated, multi-disciplinary programs to operationalize strategies to reduce the burnout and increase the professional fulfillment of faculty. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Administration of the biennial Wellbeing Survey; analysis and subsequent distribution of results.
  • Utilization of Wellbeing survey data and other key data sources to evaluate the success of the programs they will be responsible for and advise on the revision/evolution of the portfolio’s strategy.
  • Design and delivery of niche professional development and mentor programs for faculty, and leadership development opportunities such as the Brigham Leadership Program.
  • Identification of opportunities to optimize the Electronic Health Record and associated technologies to reduce the burden of the EHR on physicians. Develops, pilots and evaluates programs to meet this goal.
  • Supports departments and divisions to test ideas to advance faculty wellbeing through funded grants for local initiative.
  • In collaboration with the Program Director, Care Innovation, sees opportunities and leads projects to improve operational workflow and improvement.
  • Develops and supports programs to support the mental health and personal wellbeing of physicians, such as the Faculty Trainee Mental Health Program.
  • In partnership with ACMO, crafts and implements incentive programs at the Department and individual level to reinforce key goals of the company and well-being strategies (e.g., Pool B, BWPO Quality Incentive Program).
  • Responsibility for the planning and delivery of recognition programs such as the BWPO Pillar Awards and the New Faculty Luncheon.
  • Collaborates within the Brigham, with MGPO and across Mass General Brigham to share learning and system resources to support wellbeing, and to find opportunities for collaboration for the benefit of faculty and employees.
  • Coordinates communication of the portfolio’s offerings through email newsletters, website, and other methods.
  • Supports the BWPO Physicians’ Council, which brings together departmental Wellbeing Champions.
  • Monitors and reports on the completion of Annual Career Reviews for each faculty member.
  • Leads a team of resources, both directly and indirectly, to ensure the successful execution of the portfolio’s goals, through:
    • Defining staffing needs and capacity planning with existing staff to advise strategic and financial decisions regarding the need for new roles and resources.
    • Recruiting, hiring, and training of new team members, in conjunction with Brigham and BWPO Human Resources and the hiring manager.
    • Supporting the professional development of team members.
    • Ensures communication and smooth information flow between involved parties, including but not limited to team members, physicians, BWPO and MGPO administration, hospital leadership, and Mass General Brigham staff.
  • Leads all program budgets, including funding from multiple sources; negotiates and prepares contracts with external consultants, vendors, and venues in relationship to all led programs. Prepares budget and financial analyses for all program budgets, development proposals and reports, and federally funded grants and contracts.

Basic Requirements:

  • Advanced Degree in public health, healthcare management or related field required
  • Academic medical center or large healthcare system experience
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in healthcare field, Faculty Development and Wellbeing and/or related Project Management position(s)
  • Demonstrated experience in project management leadership
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Experience in promoting healthcare provider behavior change is desirable
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading working relationships in matrixed structure
  • Established scholarly record with focus on quality measurement and evaluation science preferred
  • Experience in statistical analysis as well as established record in data analysis and presentation

  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated skills around mentoring and developing staff
  • Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently
  • Ability to see projects through from conception to completion
  • Strong analytic skills and computer skills with MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Demonstrated expertise in data and analytics
  • Ability to lead a team within different levels of experience and skills
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast paced and changing environment
  • Knowledge of budget planning processes and management and ability to assume financial oversight of multiple budgets and funding sources.

Working conditions:

  • This position is a hybrid position: Office-based environment and remote work
  • Travel to various BWH/BWPO campus locations (Needham and Boston) as well as to other Mass General Brigham facilities
  • May require carrying meeting materials and small boxes

Supervisory responsibility:

  • Directly leads a program team of program managers, project managers, as well as indirect supervision of 2 or more FTEs

Fiscal responsibility:

  • Champions the funding during the budget season; and supervises monthly actual program expenditures
  • Prepares summary reporting to Mass General Brigham for expenses and forecasts on the BWPO Wellbeing Sundry Fund
