Job Description
BACKGROUND
Antaeus Theatre Company is an actor-driven theater company that explores and produces timely and timeless works, grounded in our passion for the Classics. We illuminate diverse human experiences through performance, training and outreach. We believe in the transformative power of live theater. Antaeus is located at the Kiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Downtown Glendale, CA. The center includes an 80-seat theater, a reconfigurable 36-seat black box space, and a theater library. Antaeus is currently in the final year of implementing a three-year strategic plan to build out its infrastructure and create long-term financial sustainability.
CURRENT ENVIRONMENT
Antaeus operates with an annual budget of approximately $1.3 million. In March 2020, in response to COVID-19, Antaeus closed its building and subsequently postponed all in-person activities. We have shifted some programming online during this time and also produced a new audio play series, The Zip Code Plays: Los Angeles. The current staff of eight is working remotely, but is in the process of transitioning to a hybrid schedule with some office days required. Antaeus has also announced the return to in-person programming in late February 2022.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Production Manager (PM) will oversee the execution of productions and rentals at Antaeus, as well as oversee the day-to-day operations of the Production Department. The PM will also work closely with the Producing Executive Director, Artistic Director, Stage Managers, Designers, and Directors.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Maintain updated production calendars; generate and oversee tech, load-in and load-out schedules; schedule and attend production meetings, take notes and distribute to the team.
● Create and oversee production budgets; track expenses; estimate and track labor and material costs for productions and advise Antaeus leadership of the potential consequences of any proposed changes; ensure timely payment to vendors, creative teams, and overhire crews.
● Manage the contract process for designers, directors, and actors; hires overhire crew; oversee new hire paperwork for creative team and overhire crew.
● Review all designs to troubleshoot any early adjustments that need to be made in relation to practical application and financial feasibility based on budgets; work with the Production Team to find solutions to technical problems and challenges.
● Supervise all builds, changeovers, load-ins, light hangs, and strikes; take an active role as a carpenter, electrician, or otherwise as needed.
● Maintain and promote a safe work environment by following and enforcing all safety regulations, providing safety equipment, training employees on safe practices, reporting incidents, managing record keeping, staying up-to-date on safety issues and advising on safety related policies.
● Serve on the team of Covid Compliance Officers for Antaeus at rehearsals and events as needed.
● Attend all production meetings, tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and previews for notes; responsible for reading show reports; responsible for daily repair and upkeep of all production design elements throughout the production’s entire run.
● Evaluate, update and maintain soft goods, materials stock, tools, lighting, sound and video inventory; perform preventative maintenance and arrange for repairs as needed.
● Ensure that all outside rentals technical needs are met.
● Support the Director of Operations on facility upkeep as needed.
Qualifications:
● Three years of experience in production management and/or technical theater.
● Thorough knowledge of theatrical lighting, audio and wiring.
● Skilled in theater rigging with the ability to hang lights, scenery, drops and other equipment safely.
● Experience preparing and overseeing budgets.
● Appreciates and is enthusiastic about theater and the important role that cultural organizations play in the life of a vibrant community. Must be able to balance the many challenges inherent in working in a growing, fast-paced intimate theater environment.
● A clear and demonstrable commitment to anti-racism and setting tangible goals around EDI values.
● A true collaborator who possesses the ability to work in a team environment. Confident, personable, and positive individual with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
● Technical Knowledge – must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Q-Lab, and programming ETC 3000 or equivalent lighting board.
● Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The salary range for this position will be $25-30/hr and commensurate with experience. All employees at Antaeus Theatre Company undertake other duties as needed and all positions require flexible work hours, including evening and weekends.
