Full-Time Production Coordinator

Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Publishing Director, the Production Coordinator will assist in receiving manuscripts for books to be published by New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) and Newbury Street Press (NSP). The Production Coordinator will be directly supporting content production and coordinating the routing of materials for book projects and the Mayflower Descendant journal through the production workflow process.

Newbury Street Press (NSP) is an imprint of American Ancestors/NEHGS. Established in 1996, it is America’s premier publisher of privately sponsored family histories and produces high-quality volumes that support the purpose of American Ancestors/NEHGS: to educate, inspire, and connect people to advance the study of family history. NEHGS books include study project publications such as the Great Migration, Early New England Settlers, Western Massachusetts Families, and Early Vermont Settlers series. NEHGS also publishes records compilations, how-to books on genealogical research and writing, and books on family history art forms, such as family trees and registers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Check genealogists’ final manuscript, Release to Production Memo, and project files prior to accepting into Production.
  • Hire and deliver manuscripts to freelance copyeditors.
  • Organize available image files, create art log, and research additional images from outside repositories.
  • Address general copyedit queries and send genealogical queries back to genealogists.
  • Inventory and scan photos and documents from NSP patrons as needed.
  • Review page proofs, marking changes using the Adobe Acrobat Comment tool.
  • Proofread pages against foul or hire and send pages to freelance proofreaders if there are more than 100 comments in Acrobat.
  • Address indexer queries as needed and review index in pages.
  • Process freelancer invoices.
  • Package and return materials to NSP patrons.
  • Assist with administrative duties related to the Mayflower Descendant journal.
  • Meet regularly with Books and Journals team to identify areas of collaboration, review status of projects, and contribute to overall process improvement.
  • Participate in open-house events at NEHGS headquarters.
  • Contribute to other American Ancestors/NEHGS publications as requested, including writing for the Register, Mayflower Descendant, American Ancestors magazine, and the Vita Brevis blog.

Skill and Qualifications:

 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding time management and organizational skills
  • Able to prioritize effectively
  • Able to multitask while maintaining attention to detail
  • Able to work independently
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word
  • Strong skills in Adobe Acrobat
  • Familiarity with Office 365 (SharePoint and One Drive)
  • Familiarity with or interest in genealogy a plus

Education Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum three years’ experience in publishing project management

Salary: $37,000- $45,000
