The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) formed in December of 2014 and was created as a space for Black organizations across the country to debate and discuss the current political conditions, develop shared assessments of what political interventions were necessary in order to achieve key policy, cultural and political wins, convene organizational leadership in order to debate and co-create a shared movement-wide strategy.
M4BL is an ecosystem of more than 150 Black led organizations representing thousands of Black people from across the country that have come together with renewed energy, strategy and purpose to articulate a common vision and agenda. Our ecosystem is united by core values and politics that seek to build an anti-capitalist, abolitionist and Black queer feminist future.
Position Summary
M4BL is hiring a team of 3 Executive Leads to hold the responsibility of creating cohesion and alignment across the various teams in the M4BL ecosystem, and implementing the collectively determined vision and goals of the M4BL ecosystem. This Executive Team will manage and support director level staff and be responsible for developing and overseeing the 1) Operations & Infrastructure 2) Field Program & Organizing 3) Political Strategy & Campaigns of the ecosystem. The roles for the Operations and Infrastructure Executive and the Field Program & Organizing Executive have been filled, M4BL is hiring for the third Executive position.
The Political Strategy and Campaigns Executive Lead will be responsible for developing political strategy that allows the ecosystem to successfully advance key campaigns. This lead will work with key staff and leaders on M4BL’s policy, legislative, electoral and power building strategies as well as with communications and digital teams on campaign strategy and implementation. This role will be key as it focuses on exploring how to successfully execute movement wide campaigns that are centered on building power. This Executive Lead will work closely and in partnership with electoral strategists, policy experts, key M4BL leaders and staff to develop both campaigns and implementation strategies that not only advance our demands and tactical strategies, but also strengthens us as an ecosystem and builds power. The Campaigns Executive Lead will also be responsible for assessing M4BL’s programmatic reach across Black people in partnership with the Field & Organizing Executive Lead. This role requires a high level of political strategy experience and an appetite to build and win campaigns.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

- Work with key leads and staff to develop movement wide campaigns that have a goal of
reaching millions and advancing the goals established within the campaign - Take a lead in partnership with key staff and leads on developing M4BL’S Legislative
strategy - Work with all leads and key staff to explore how best we use organizing, narrative
strategy, communications and technology to amass powerful campaigns. - Work in partnership with the other Executive Leads to determine what structure would be
required to absorb and recruit individuals. - Hire, Manage and Evaluate Director level partnerships, legislative, communications and
other campaigning staff - Represent M4BL at public forums, national convenings, in the press/media and at
various speaking engagements - Work with other Executive Team members to ensure that M4BL Leads and Staff are
carrying out the vision, the politics, the values and the principles of the ecosystem. - Work with Field + Organizing Lead and other key staff and leaders to respond to
emerging/rapid response organizing needs as it relates to political strategy and
campaigns.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- High level of competency, experience, and talent in the majority of the following areas:
- Developing and overseeing the implementation of legislative campaigns
- Grassroots and grasstops campaigning, and mass organizing experience
- Experience Building organizational and coalition infrastructure
- Experience working on electoral campaigns
- Experience with public policy (both C3 and C4 policy work)
- Experience working on the development of communications, storytelling, and narrative strategy
- Personal alignment with the M4BL’s vision and values
- Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and Black liberation work
- High level of political development
- Demonstrated ability to see the bigger picture, think and act strategically, and pay attention to details
- Ability to build consensus and relationships among directors, partners, and staff
- Skilled at recognizing challenges, identifying potential solutions, and communicating challenges and solutions with multiple team members
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience and skill at managing director level staff
- Skilled at time management and project coordination
- Grounded and flexible with a high degree of integrity, transparency, and collaborative ability
- Able to pay close and consistent attention to details and accuracy
- High level of emotional intelligence
- Ability to work on a virtual team, in particular, and juggle multiple projects at once while proactively communicating with all in a virtual environment
- Demonstrated reliability, flexibility, and follow-up

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Prior experience working with social justice movement organizations is required
- A minimum of 7 years of campaigning
- Experience in building teams that can effectively execute dynamic campaigns
