Role: Organizing Director
Location and Timeline: This is a remote position that can be located anywhere in the state of Wisconsin, with a preference for candidates based in or near Milwaukee, La Crosse, Green Bay, Appleton, and Eau Claire, WI. This position is temporary with a flexible early-April start date beginning on or before April 15 and will run until December 31, 2024.
Who We Are: The Outreach Team is the national engine of campaigners and organizers powering the young-people vote movement. With an on-the-ground presence in communities all across the country, our world-class team runs successful civic engagement campaigns to build a future that’s fairer, healthier, safer and more peaceful for everyone. We are excited to once again be working with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin to mobilize Wisconsin communities around protecting and advancing reproductive justice and the upcoming 2024 General Election.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) is the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, the state’s largest and most trusted reproductive health care provider. PPAWI educates and lobbies on behalf of women’s health and works to elect candidates who support family planning and the full range of reproductive health care.
General Overview:
The Organizing Director will manage a team of Campus and Community Organizers charged with engaging and expanding awareness of reproductive rights access and threats specifically within the state legislatures through online actions, voter outreach, and relationship building. Over the summer, the Organizing Director will develop and oversee the launch of a summer training program dedicated to relational organizing before heading into the fall. Come August, the Organizing Director will launch and oversee voter identification and Get Out The Vote operations in key state legislative districts through Election Day 2024 – work which the organizers will be promoting by using voter identification systems and relational organizing tools, as well as the recruitment and training of volunteers to engage in GOTV activities.
This is a full time position for an experienced project and people manager who loves data and technology. The position can be located anywhere in the state of Wisconsin and may involve significant travel.
Responsibilities
Client Management
- Interface regularly with clients who work on voter registration, voter contact, signature gathering, and face to face fundraising
- Write and edit regular project reports to clients
- Prepare and run calls including but not limited to: client onboarding calls, weekly check-in calls, debriefing calls
- Proactively identify problems in the program and propose solutions when appropriate
- Identify and recruit new clients
Staff Management
- Hire and manage a team of full time staff, who will in turn supervise teams of other full time and part time staff
- Drive goals on the team to ensure that all deliverables are met, including turnaround and accuracy
- Build and maintain a team culture that centers equity and justice
- Treat staff with empathy and respect and ensure the managers you supervise do the same
- Maintain high performance standards and provide ongoing feedback and evaluation
- Hold staff accountable and have tough conversations when necessary; coach the managers you supervise to do the same with their staff
- Develop and facilitate trainings for your team
Tech Project Management
- Manage the development of improved systems for tracking work, which may include identifying and managing a vendor, testing new features, and providing feedback
Administration
- Manage and track a national budget and submit accurate budget updates
- Ensure payroll is accurate for your team by managing the hours reporting process and reviewing payroll
- Ensure your team adheres to HR requirements and recommendations as related to onboarding, offboarding, and disciplinary actions.
This job may be for you if you:
- Excel at running large scale, social change campaigns with urgent deadlines (in the past you may have run issue-based campaigns, voter registration drives, voter contact campaigns, signature drives, face-to-face fundraising drives, or some combination of those)
- Share The Outreach Team’s commitment to prioritizing equity and justice in our work and team culture
- Know how to be hands-on when necessary while still developing and empowering your staff
- Are obsessive about details and can train others to be as obsessive as you are
- Make thorough and detailed numbers-based plans that others can understand and buy into
- Have some healthy paranoia and always trust but verify
- Are able to work long hours occasionally, and travel frequently when it’s safe to do so
Qualifications
- Significant staff management experience, especially in campaigns, canvass operations, or field organizing
- Experience being bottom line on a large project with urgent deadlines
- Experience centering equity and justice in your work
- Good planner
- Extremely detail-oriented: you catch small and large errors that most people miss
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel/Sheets
Compensation
This is a salaried position with a range of $72,000-$81,000 per year depending on experience. Salary within this range is determined through an equity calculator. As part of The Outreach Team’s commitment to compensation equity and transparency, we have a no negotiation policy. Salary negotiations can introduce bias and perpetuate wage inequality. At the end of the campaign, there may be opportunities for advancement. We offer a generous benefits package, including:
