POSITION DETAILS
Brooklyn College, a vibrant senior college of the City University of New York, invites applications for the position of Performing Arts Center Director. Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, the Performing Arts Center Director will direct the strategic and day-to-day operations and administrative activities of Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts which includes the Claire Tow Theater, a 2,380-seat performing arts venue located on the campus of Brooklyn College, various event rental spaces, and – in collaboration with the Department of Theater and Conservatory of Music – oversee the two-hundred seat Don Buchwald and the New Workshop theaters (capacity of 50 to 120 people).
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, typical duties include but are not limited to the following:
Leadership and Production Management:
- Manage the Center’s production, front of house (FOH), and arts education units, including the Preparatory Center.
- Oversee SchoolTime, an arts education initiative that collaborates with artists and artistic companies to bring live performances to K-12 students primarily from NYC DOE schools in central and south Brooklyn.
- Lead and support the production team, ensuring effective resource allocation and addressing the impact of current staff vacancies by providing clear direction and operational stability.
Technical Expertise:
- Possess a strong working knowledge of theatrical audio, video, and lighting systems, enabling effective management of technical resources and troubleshooting.
- Ensure that all technical needs for events and productions are met, working closely with internal
- technical staff and external vendors as necessary.
Event Calendar Management and Scheduling:
- Manage the centralized Tow Center events calendar, ensuring all performances, rentals, and productions are properly scheduled and resources are allocated efficiently.
- Implement a new enterprise-level scheduling solution to streamline operations, improve coordination, and optimize the use of performance spaces and resources.
Rental and Space Usage Inquiries:
- Handle all rental and space usage inquiries for the Center, managing the booking process from initial inquiry through contract execution and event completion.
- Collaborate with internal and external parties to ensure smooth scheduling and efficient use of facilities.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with the departments of Theater and Conservatory of Music, and other key units such as the College’s Auxiliary Enterprise Corporation, to streamline business processes for rental inquiries, contracts, and overall execution.
- Work with the Bursar’s Office to manage box-office needs, streamlining processes to improve efficiency.
- Oversee and manage the Center’s webpage to ensure that information is accurate, up-to-date, and effectively communicates with stakeholders.
Budget and Financial Management:
- Work closely with the Executive Director on the development and management of the annual Tow Center’s operational budget for approval by the Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration (SVPFA) and the Auxiliary Enterprises Board.
Facilities and Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure the maintenance and safety of all equipment and spaces within the Center in coordination with the College’s Facilities office.
Entrepreneurial Vision and Revenue Generation:
- Develop and implement creative and cost-effective business plans to generate revenue, attract program clients, sponsors, and audiences.
- Identify grant writing and development opportunities to support the Center’s financial and operational goals.
Assessment and Reporting:
- Establish and manage annual assessment goals and outcomes, ensuring timely reporting and analysis for continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree and eight years’ related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in arts administration, performing arts management, or similar preferred.
- Experience production management experience in a theatrical, performance, or similar setting.
- Strong working knowledge of theatrical audio, video, stage, and lighting systems.
- Experience working with faculty and/or in a higher education environment.
- Experience managing space rental agreements and revenue generation.
- Proven track record in managing large-scale shows and events, with substantial experience in theater operations.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$83,878 – $96,602; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
