Full-Time People Ops Specialist (Payroll & Benefits)

MissionWired – Posted by MissionWired Anywhere

Job Description

At MissionWired, we help clients create revolutionary digital strategies that advance their mission, change our country, and have a positive impact on the world.
We’re digital-obsessed, tech-savvy do-gooders who care deeply about social change. We’ve brought digital strategies to life for nonprofit organizations working around the world, including Save the Children, Sandy Hook Promise, and Friends of the Earth, as well as progressive political organizations, campaigns and candidates. This cycle, we’re excited to support the DGA in flipping and protecting governorships across the country while expanding the Democratic majority in the Senate via our work with the DSCC, Sen. Raphael Warnock, Rep. Val Demings, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Sen. Maggie Hassan.
We’re an equal-opportunity employer and take seriously our commitment to equality and equity. Our efforts to be inclusive and create opportunity don’t end when someone joins us – they begin.
We’ve set our sights on changing the world through our work and with our clients, and representation is at the foundation of what we do. We know that diversity of thought and background makes us stronger. That’s why we’re committed to building and maintaining a diverse community.
Every new team member broadens our perspective and allows us to think bigger. We’ll be at our best when people from underrepresented communities and people with a range of perspectives and lived experiences want to come, stay, and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Overview: MissionWired is seeking a People Operations Specialist focused in Payroll & Benefits to support the continued growth of our team. The People Ops Specialist will be primarily responsible for the overall operation of payroll processes and related functions, as well as the administration of team member benefits. The Specialist should have familiarity with core HR functions, including onboarding and offboarding; employment law; payroll processes and payroll taxes; benefits administration, including health, supplemental benefits, and retirement plans; as well as HRIS administration. We are looking for someone with unwavering character: discerning, confidential, professional, and empathetic.

We need someone who is comfortable adapting to these changes while ensuring every employee is paid correctly, has the correct benefits setup, and has a positive employee experience.

You will be responsible for:

    • Preparing and maintaining accurate records for all team members, as well as preparing reports of payroll transactions through our HRIS and within all related vendor and benefit portals;
    • Developing an in-depth understanding of our HRIS, pulling reports for data analysis and projections
    • Working alongside internal and external groups on tax filings and forms and yearly audits for compliance in all areas
    • Understanding process updates as they relate to new hires/exits and other employee life-cycle changes
    • Handling I-9s and responding to employment verifications as needed
    • Administering benefits programs for all team members, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and retirement programs
    • Acting as a liaison with team members regarding benefits and payroll, answering questions and providing information
    • Supporting the administration of leave of absence and FMLA requests, including providing basic FMLA information to employees, tracking absences, and compliance on related state leave laws;
    • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll and wage and hour laws;
    • Ensuring all required reporting, forms, and posters are up to date and maintained;
    • Identifying and recommending updates to HR-related software, systems, and procedures
    • Performing benchmarking, market research, and vendor research as it relates to the role.

Must-have qualifications:

    • 2+ years of experience in an employee-support role with payroll processing and benefits administration (including medical insurance and retirement plans) being your primary function
    • Minimum experience should include working within one or more common HRIS and Payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Oracle, SAP, Rippling, Paylocity, or similar)
    • Basic knowledge of HR laws and regulations such as workers’ compensation insurance, unemployment, COBRA, FMLA, and compliance topics related to insurance benefits, 401k, etc.
    • Academic experience in Accounting, HR, Business, or a related field
    • Intermediate knowledge of Excel and Google Sheets – including formulas, pivot tables, and lookups – and other office software (ex. Google Workspace, PowerPoint, Google Drive)
    • Impeccable attention to detail, organizational skills, and strong time management
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to clearly and efficiently collaborate within the People and Finance teams

Preferred qualifications:

    • 3-5 years of combined experience in HR, as a Generalist or Specialist
    • Multi-state payroll experience with an employee headcount of 100+
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, HR, Business, or related field
    • Certification related to HR or Payroll, or other professional development related to the role
    • Experience handling significant payroll and benefit transitions such as HRIS changes, insurance provider changes, etc.
    • Comfort presenting in groups
    • Involvement in an acquisition or divestment is a plus.

We offer a comprehensive total rewards package including 100% employer paid health insurance, dependent contributions, dental and vision insurance, 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution, four months fully paid parental leave, 30 days of paid leave annually, and performance bonus and growth opportunities.
