REPORTS TO: Payroll Manager

STATUS:          Full-time, non-exempt

Lyric Opera is looking to hire a Payroll Associate to join our Finance department. The Payroll Associate maintains payroll-related accounts and is responsible for the reconciliation, analysis, and accuracy of all payroll accounts across Lyric’s diverse and complex workforce.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate leadership in accordance with Lyric’s mission and vision.
  • Proactively support the Payroll team in executing all pay processes across Lyric for multiple union and non-union groups.
  • Support the Payroll team in analyzing time records and processing payrolls in accordance with the provisions of complex labor contracts.
  • Ensure full-cycle payroll integrity, owning accuracy from inputting data to proofing final payroll output and delivering pay stubs to staff.
  • Responsible for preparing monthly benefit payments for health & welfare, pension, annuities, and union training fund and dues for employees and independent contractors for multiple unions.
  • Prepare support for financial statements and all internal and external audits as they relate to compensation, 401(k), 403(b), workers compensation, and severance.
  • Support the Payroll team in effectively coordinating fringe benefit deductions and payments/reports to third parties including wage garnishments and union dues. Generate reports to calculate or verify accuracy of payments and submit payments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service in responding to employee inquiries regarding all pay related matters including researching and resolving benefits related issues. Work with appropriate internal department supervisors and/or external software service vendors to resolve issues and correct discrepancies in pay and related payroll systems/records.
  • Coordinate proper flow of employee payroll data between the Payroll department and Rehearsal, Music Administration, Human Resources, Facilities & Technical, Finance and other departments as required.
  • Support year-end W-2 tie-outs and distribution of W-2s.
  • Provide back-up support to other Finance Office staff, as needed, including coverage for others on the Payroll team.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Opera by performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • As the business evolves, so may this role. These duties may change as Lyric’s leadership identifies the need at any time.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in business administration or related field and three (3) to five (5) years of payroll experience, or an appropriate combination of education and experience to demonstrate competency across the role.
  • Proficiency with payroll HRIS systems (ADP Workforce Now/Enterprise eTime) and accounting systems (Navision/Microsoft Dynamics preferred).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (specifically Excel) and Google Suite.
  • Mastery of accuracy and the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively to meet payroll deadlines.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong math aptitude.
  • Prior experience working with unions and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Functional knowledge of U.S. individual tax laws.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and relationship building skills with the ability to provide customer service to internal and external contacts, including handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work and think independently, a motivated self-starter who also works well in a larger team.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to occasionally work evenings, weekends, or holidays to process payroll.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time and screen time.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other office equipment.
  • Occasional lifting up to 15 pounds.
