Job Description

The Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice has immediate openings for a Paralegal I and Arraignment Paralegals to work in the Bronx County office to provide data entry support and client services.  The work schedules require staffing Criminal Court arraignments on:

  • Tuesday from 9 am – 5 pm & Wednesday-Saturday from 5 pm – 1 am, or
  • Tuesday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm & Saturday 8 am – 4:30 pm, or
  • Monday – Friday from 9 am to 5 pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in a court part gathering client information
  • Interact with clients and assist their families by providing case-related information
  • Access information from court records and assist attorneys
  • Record case information using manual or electronic means
  • Conduct criminal history and conflict checks following established protocol
  • Prepare written reports summarizing information compiled
  • Obtain and copy court and office files
  • Assemble court files and materials for attorneys
  • Liaison between attorneys and their clients
  • Perform functions in the support staff band, unrelated to the Paralegal I title, only as necessary and on a temporary basis
  • Position may require work in office, courtroom, and other “field” settings
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • GED certificate, high school diploma, four years of relevant work experience, or some combination of work and education required
  • One year of experience in a legal or other relevant work (paid or unpaid) environment preferred
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired
  • Fluency in a second language common to our client population preferred
  • Some relevant college-level work and/or paralegal training preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient computer and word processing skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to multi-task

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range/ Salary: $53,295 – $81,795
