Job Description

Queens Botanical Garden is seeking a creative and dynamic individual to join our NYC Compost Project team in a full time position. The position will require a high level of public engagement that demands aptitude for volunteer management, curriculum development and delivery and inspiring of new audiences to compost. The qualified individual will be joining a team devoted to compost outreach, education, and creation from NYC residential food scraps! Our team will look to this individual to engage new audiences through relationship building, social media, and partnerships; to be the primary point of contact for communications with volunteers and event participants; and provide training and supervision for a variety of interns and volunteers.

The NYC Compost Project (NYCCP), created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY19, the Garden served over 250,000 visitors, including 32,000 schoolchildren, and 48,215 through outreach efforts offsite. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.

This position is full time, Tuesday through Saturday with benefits. Salary range is 42K – 45K.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and supervise weekly volunteer events, Master Composter volunteer hours and supervise select internships
  • Deliver programming on and off site, during work hours, evenings and weekends as scheduled including a variety of workshops, tours and presentations
  • Develop new audiences for programming and actively cultivate deeper connections in the community relative to composting and organics recycling
  • Provide administrative support for all programming, including registration, run of event, communication and follow-up; replenishment of print materials and hard goods; and create and send our monthly newsletter
  • Support Master Composter class and engage MCs in NYC Compost Project work

Supporting Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Education Department regarding school visits and instructor updates
  • Work with staff to ensure well-maintained and smooth running operations
  • Keep detailed records and track outcomes relative to work plan and monthly reporting
  • Attend community meetings as needed
  • Promote programming through online, print and social media
  • Support the NYCCP Hosted by QBG team as needed and/or directed by the Project Manager or Director of Education
  • Act as an overall ambassador of Queens Botanical Garden and the NYC Compost Project

Qualifications:

  • Two years experience as an educator
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
  • Fluency in a second language, particularly Mandarin and Cantonese is preferred
  • Experienced composter and recycler
  • Knowledge of farm or vegetable & herb production and experience as an educator on a farm or in an outdoor venue
  • Positive attitude and good work ethic, ability to self-direct for physical and administrative tasks.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Local and community oriented with excellent communication skills
  • Adaptable and flexible to dynamic conditions and work hours
  • Ability to perform physical outdoor jobs in all weather and lift and carry up to 30 lbs
  • Administrative level skill with Google Docs, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and a high level of organization
  • Candidate must possess a valid NYC driver’s license and be willing to drive a large dump truck in NYC
