Full-Time Outdoor Recreation Supervisor

Cary, NC is seeking a passionate, organized and adaptable outdoor recreation professional to join our team as an Outdoor Recreation Supervisor. This position will play a critical role in the planning and delivery of unique outdoor recreation experiences for citizens and families. The position is based at Fred G. Bond Metro Park, a 310-acre oasis in the middle of Cary which offers opportunities for many types of recreation including boating, archery and a challenge course. This position will also have a work location at Cary’s Action Sports facility located at Robert V. Godbold Park, as well as supporting additional community-based action sports elements located throughout Cary.
The Outdoor Recreation Program Supervisor will be passionate about providing and creating outdoor recreation opportunities such as outdoor recreation programs, classes and events; overseeing outdoor recreation facilities and operations; supporting Bond Park visitor experiences; and supporting the programs, events, operations and facilities related to action sports (skateboarding, BMX biking, mountain biking and scootering).
Typical Tasks
- Supervises the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of diverse, Town-wide outdoor/adventure programs.
- Supervises the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of special events for Outdoor Recreation facilities and parks.
- Supervises operations and staffing at Outdoor Recreation facilities.
- Maintains Outdoor Recreation facilities, which may include the boathouse, Action Sports Park, challenge course and park amenities. Responsibilities include staffing, maintenance, operations, and customer contact; ensures the safety of Boathouse, Action Sports and Challenge Course operations during programs.
- Supports the Outdoor Recreation Program Supervisor in the operation, maintenance and program delivery of Bond Park Challenge Course.
- Oversees the development and delivery of program training for Outdoor Recreation, Action Sports, Boating, Archery, and other assigned work areas.
- Administers and develops Cary Archery Junior Olympic Archery Program, Archery Club, and related tournaments.
- May supervise full time, part time and contract staff (including Park Attendants and outdoor recreation instructors
- Recruits, hires, coordinates, supervises, trains and evaluates temporary staff, program instructors, contractor staff, full time staff, and/or volunteers.
- Coordinates security of the facility with the police and fire departments.
- Oversees the maintenance of facilities; ensures national standards are met; makes sure facilities are clean, maintained, and stocked with supplies.
- Establish rules and procedures for efficient and effective operation of program area.
- Project, request, track and oversee budgetary needs for programs, and events.
- Oversee program data entry and information pertaining to class participation, registration and facility revenues.
- Maintains knowledge of organizations, trends and issues in recreation programming pertinent to program area.
- Manage contracts for events/programs by Bond Park Staff.
- Coordinate Communication Plans and submit to marketing staff.
- Oversees facilities and programs that operate mainly on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work during operational hours will be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of outdoor recreation trends and programming best practices
- General knowledge of action sports park operations, including mountain biking, BMX cycling, skateboarding and scooters

- General knowledge of concession stands operations
- General knowledge of basic small watercraft maintenance
- General knowledge of security practices
- General knowledge of budgeting
- General knowledge of common computer software
- Skilled in interpersonal communication
- Ability to effectively supervise others
- Ability to deliver programming and training on a wide range of outdoor topics including boating, survival, fire building, nature, orienteering, archery, routine skateboarding, scooter and bike safety practices; etc.
- Ability and willingness to explore and learn new computer software quickly
- Ability to manage a variety of customer, staff and work demands at once
- Ability to interact tactfully and professionally with the public, coworkers and employees
- Ability to analyze and improve processes and procedures
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes nights, weekends and holidays (including being on site at least two of four weekends a month during the primary season, March through October)
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education or a related field and at least 3 years of experience working in public recreation programs, including at least two years of supervisory experience with full-time or part-time staffPreference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
- Experience developing outdoor recreational experiences for the community
- Direct experience supervising outdoor recreation staff or supervising staff based at multiple sites.
Required and Preferred Certifications:
Required CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
Preferred USA Archery Level 2 or higher (or ability to achieve within 1 year)
Preferred ACCT Level 2 (or ability to achieve within 1 year)
Preferred CPR/First Aid Instructor
Preferred small craft instructor in Canoeing, Kayaking and/or Sailing
Physical Requirements:
Work in this class requires significant physical ability and stamina due to the assignment of direct supervision of outdoor programs. Work requires the employee to lift moderately heavy to heavy items and be able to demonstrate exercises that will be performed on the ropes course, including work at height. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
Special Requirements:
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
