Outdoor Adventure Manager: The Outdoor Adventure Manager leads year-round weekend programs and trips across the state for Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO). This position is responsible for outdoor program design and implementation, risk mitigation, program administration, and staff leadership. This position is responsible for planning high quality outdoor adventure programs that highlights high adventure, technical skill development, and leadership opportunities for middle and high school aged Girl Scouts. This position will manage the Outdoor Adventure Club program, Troop Camps & Programs, and support other statewide outdoor program initiatives. When not directly facilitating programs or performing other required in-person job duties, this position has the flexibility to work remotely throughout the year, in determination with the Director of Outdoor Programs.
**GSCO prefers applicants who live in, or who plan to relocate to the Front Range of Colorado for this role.
Program Design & Facilitation
1) Outdoor Adventure Club: Develop, facilitate, and manage the Outdoor Adventure Club, including all aspects of program creation, external program vendor coordination, customer communication, staff management, marketing, and other operational logistics.
2) Troop Programs & Camps: Develop, facilitate, and manage Troop Camps and programs at GSCO camp properties including all aspects of program creation, administration, customer communication, and other operational logistics.
3) Other Outdoor Programs: Create and support other programs, events, initiatives, resources, and opportunities as needed.
4) Manage programs independently and make autonomous decisions regarding program facilitation, staffing, and design without management approval.
5) Provide or support emergency management during on-site incidents.
6) Conduct participant assessments and program evaluations for long-term planning and program improvements.
Staff Leadership
1) Recruit, hire, train, and manage a team of year-round Outdoor Program On-Call staff.
2) Assign staff members to events, schedule virtual program planning calls, assign program stations, and delegate logistical tasks such as rental vehicle pick-ups, menu planning and food orders, packing supplies, writing program plans, and on-site program preparations.
3) Schedule and lead annual trainings for staff, including zip line, low ropes, Paddle Sports Facilitator, USA Archery Level 1, and more.
4) Track certification compliance of all year-round on-call staff.
5) On-site lead for events: Conduct pre-event staff meetings and post-program debrief sessions, expectation setting, and coaching conversations as needed.
Outdoor Equipment & Specialty Training
1) Manage statewide outdoor program equipment, including storage, maintenance, and coordination across departments.
2) Support specialty outdoor training opportunities for Girl Scout staff and volunteers.
Administration
1) Stay current in knowledge of youth development and outdoor recreation industry trends and compliance in relation to the American Camping Association Standards, Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, and other certifying outdoor industry organizations.
2) Manage administrative responsibilities in a timely, independent, and detail-oriented manner. Meet program planning and administration deadlines, monitor program budget, respond to emails and phone calls quickly, manage tasks independently and communicate additional support needed.
3) Respect the confidential nature of all information pertaining to staff, volunteers, and campers.
4) Interact with Girl Scout digital systems including: Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CampMinder, Salesforce, Formstack, Social Media tools and others.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Recruit, hire, train, and manage a team of year-round Outdoor Program On-Call staff.
2) Conduct regular staff meetings to guide staff in planning and carrying out assignments.
3) Coordinate staff schedules and communicate to staff.
4) Carry out ongoing program observations and training to assure that standards meet the activity criteria and that relationships with campers and staff are positive and appropriate.
5) Approve of staff timesheets.
EDUCATIONAL OR FORMAL TRAINING
1) Four-year degree in outdoor leadership, recreation, education, youth development, environmental studies, related field or equivalent training and experience.
2) Must be at least 21 years of age, with 3 years of driving experience.
3) Must have current or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of hire the following certifications: Wilderness First Aid, CPR, USA Archery Level 1, and Medication Administration.
EXPERIENCE
1) Proven track record for innovative and engaging program development and facilitation in an informal, outdoor setting.
2) At least two years’ experience working in an outdoor program and/or camp setting.
3) Prior supervisory experience preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
1) Ability to work non – traditional hours including: evenings, weekends, extended overnight periods on site at programs and extended hours during peak program season (May -September).
2) Requires extensive walking over uneven and unpaved terrain.
3) Able to carry, lift and/or transfer at least 50 pounds.
4) Travel & Transportation: Ability to travel to program locations across the state, Access to own transportation with insurance at required levels, Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record, and Travel over mountain roads which may include unpaved rough terrain.
Salary:
- This position pays a range of $26.44-$33.65 hourly
