Salary – £29,733 to £31,553
Fully Site Based
Permanent and Full Time (37 hours per week)
Part-Time will be considered (needs to be a minimum of 29.6 hours – equivalent to 4 full days) some flexibility in start and finish times can be accommodated

We have an exciting opportunity for an Organics Analytical Chemistry Technician to join our Lancaster team!

 

You’ll be working in world-class laboratories with cutting edge instruments, combining high quality standard of analyses, with innovation (UKAS – accredited to ISO17025:2017).

 

Focusing on organic polar and non-polar compounds analyses, in a wide range of environmental samples (water, soils, biota and vegetation), increasing our understanding of a multitude of environmental questions. Additionally, you’ll provide support in the stable isotopes and inorganic chemistry laboratories. Your work will be delivering high-quality chemistry analysis to a wide range of science areas.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing materials, equipment and resources to analyse of a wide variety of matrices, including water, soils, biota and vegetation, for a wide range of compounds
  • Identification and quantification of chromatograms and spectra using MassLynx, MassHunter, etc.
  • Writing/maintaining SOPs, developing and validating new methods and instruments
  • Sample preparation (drying, weighing, grinding), sample extraction and clean up
  • Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory instruments
  • General laboratory housekeeping duties:-  safe storage of chemicals, maintaining a safe and tidy environment, ensuring the supply of consumable items, stock rotation, waste disposal and keeping all associated documentation up to date
  • Procurement, including liaising with suppliers
  • Adherence to COSHH and Risk Assessment guidelines and our laboratory’s quality system (ISO17025)

 

 

For the role of Organics Analytical Chemistry Technician, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A degree in Environmental Chemistry and/or equivalent relevant work experience
  • Proven experience in operating laboratory instruments, especially in HPLC, or GC-MS, or LC-MSMS or GC-MSMS
  • Familiarity with COSHH and Risk Assessment processes, with proven skills of good laboratory health and safety best practice, including chemical handling and storage
  • Proficiency in relevant analytical instrument software packages, for example: Masslynx, MassHunter, Chemstation, Chromeleon, or Waters Connect
  • The ability to produce high-quality and reproducible data
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel to plot and calculate results
  • Good communication skills, able to work independently and as part of a team, building good relationships across a range of stakeholders, using a collaborative and inclusive approach
  • Good organisation skills, able to adapt in a changing environment, demonstrating initiative and constructive problem-solving

 

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of working in a laboratory accredited to ISO17025 will be beneficial
