Job Description
OVERVIEW
We are seeking a well-rounded Optics Electronics Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary Soil Carbon and Plant Intelligence team that are working on ambitious, world-changing initiatives. The successful candidate will establish and execute the unprecedented standard and design of optical systems to accelerate various aspects of precision in agricultural production.
The successful candidate will make a huge impact, as their output will be a revolutionary solution as part of the world-renowned Soil Carbon program – aimed to bring together farmers and clean technology to turn climate change, economic crisis, and food insecurity into opportunities.
Terramera will provide relocation assistance to the successful candidate. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and other relevant qualifications.
MISSION
To lead the mechanical and optical architecture design for the overall Soil Carbon and Plant Intelligence function.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Optics Engineer works closely with the engineers and scientists within the multi-disciplinary Research & Development and Soil Carbon groups.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Drive technical build-out and execution on optical instrument as part of a multi-faceted and interdisciplinary engineering team
- Design and analyze end-to-end optical systems for regenerative agriculture
- Develop multi-level system requirements and technical specifications in collaboration with electronics, mechanical and machine learning engineers
- Own the system architecture documentation, design testing, risk analysis and verification activities
- Program custom simulations and modelling for use cases prior to deployment of computer vision and computational imaging algorithms
- Liaise with external affiliates such as third-party vendors in new lens and sensors (camera) evaluation and integration
- Serve as point of contact for troubleshooting and technical support of optical/optomechanical systems
- Stay abreast of new opportunities and industry trends in optical design, photonics, imaging, etc.
- Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job
REQUIREMENTS
- Post-secondary education (Bachelors, Masters or PhD) in Engineering, Physics, Optics or in relevant field
- Background in optical instrument design activities, including optical, mechanical and/or electrical engineering domains
- Experience in at least one of the engineering domains: mechanical, mechatronics, robotics, electronics/electrical, computer science, or relevant field
- Experience in taking optical systems from concept and design to assembly, prototyping and release
- Experience working with spectrophotometer/spectroscopy, spectrometer, spectral measurement, hypercube and/or fluorescent imaging is an asset
- Proficiency in ray tracing and simulation software tools, such as MATLAB, Zemax, CODE V, Scilab
- Experience with programming using C/C++, or Python is an asset
- Knowledge and/or experience in image quality testing, lens design and test charts for lens/sensor assessments
- Familiarity with agile project management is an asset
