PRIMARY FUNCTION:  About the Better Life Lab

 

The Better Life Lab at New America is a small team of researchers and storytellers working in solidarity with the movement for work-family justice. We focus on intersectional gender equity, elevating the value of care, and rewiring social policy and workplace culture to work for today’s families. Core to the Better Life Lab’s mission is human-centered research, policy analysis, and journalism. The Lab’s approach to research is creative and narrative-driven. We emphasize translating research and analysis into public-facing materials to change culture and influence the national conversation on family-supportive social policy, workplace practices, and cultural norms.

 

Position Summary:  The Better Life Lab is looking for a part-time contractor to support the program’s operations. The operations manager will work with the director to oversee grant requirements and deliverables, recruit personnel, allocate resources, and maintain the program’s financial health.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain the Lab’s annual and individual grant budgets to ensure complete coverage of full-time staff and compliance with New America and funder requirements.
  • Monitor grant deadlines and work with the Lab and New America’s central units to gather information and documents needed for the timely completion of grant applications, reports, and deliverables.
  • Review monthly financial reports and cost center spending, ensure that program spending is on track, invoices and reimbursement requests are assigned to the correct cost center, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new staff and contractors. Develop statements of work for consultants and other vendors and oversee the fulfillment of contract deliverables.
  • Oversee the Lab’s operational processes and infrastructure and look for ways to build efficiency. Ensure program staff have the permissions necessary to access the Lab’s shared calendars, drives, and various portals.
  • Liaise with New America’s finance, human resources, and development teams to keep central units up to date on all changes to the Lab’s staffing needs, funding pipeline, expenses, et cetera.
  • Support the planning and execution of program events and storytelling projects.
  • Anticipate and track operational and financial risks and provide the director with solutions.

 QUALIFICATION:

  • Demonstrated success in operations management at a nonprofit or NGO.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and monitoring multi-year budgets funded by multiple sources of revenue, including both restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
  • Experience administering grants, including handling financial reporting and ensuring compliance.
  • Ability to think strategically and outline a critical path to achieving established goals;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Superior people, project, and knowledge management skills.
  • Uncompromising adherence to deadlines.

Compensation and Benefits:  This position is a part-time contractor role without benefits. Compensation will be the hourly equivalent of a $70,000 – $90,000 annual salary, depending on experience. Though the Better Life Lab is based in Washington, DC, remote candidates are encouraged to apply. Unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available.
