Full-Time Oceanographer – National Water Level Observation Network

Job Description

Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI), together with our teaming partner, IBSS, seeks a full-time Oceanographer – NWLOW to support the Products Services Branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) in Silver Spring, MD. CO-OPS is the authoritative source for accurate, reliable, and timely tides, water levels, currents, and other coastal oceanographic and meteorological information and products. A well-qualified candidate will have an educational background in a Marine Science discipline, a working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, and/or ArcGIS and will be able to provide analysis, quality assurance and quality control of water level, meteorological, and other ancillary data to produce high-quality products. Key Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Review, analyze, and perform quality control on water level data obtained using microwave-based sensors.
  • Produce a series of tabulated products from processed water level time series, such as hourly heights, highs and lows, and monthly means.
  • Analyze oceanographic data pertaining to the transition of CO-OPS observing systems from legacy sensors to microwave water level technology, and assist in coordinating the review and approval of such transitions.
  • Provide detailed information regarding, or analysis of, oceanographic data and related products using database queries, metadata source investigations, harmonic analyses, or other in-depth analyses.
  • Conduct other data analyses and investigations, as needed, to evaluate and ensure the reliability and integrity of CO-OPS data.
  • Assist in tracking the progress of microwave water level station installations.
  • Participate on project teams, working groups, and committees related to the installation and operational declaration of microwave water level stations.

Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, physics, physical science, geophysics, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline. Knowledge of basic physical oceanographic principles, especially tides and tidal currents.
  • Knowledge of oceanographic principles, theories, and practices sufficient to review and analyze data is required.
  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications, and Google’s Collaboration Suite (e.g., Docs, Sheets, and Slides) for analyzing data and developing and editing documents and presentations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team, are required.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action.

Mid-level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, physics, physical science, geophysics, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline, and six years of relevant experience. MS degree may substitute for required experience.
  • General database and query experience and a working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, and/or ArcGIS preferred.
  • Knowledge of oceanographic principles, theories, and practices sufficient to review and analyze data is required.
  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications, and Google’s Collaboration Suite (e.g., Docs, Sheets, and Slides) for analyzing data and developing and editing documents and presentations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team, are required.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action.

Senior Level:

  • MS in oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, physics, physical science, geophysics, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline, and two years of relevant experience, or a BS plus eight years of experience.
  • General database and query experience and a working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, and/or ArcGIS preferred.
  • Knowledge of oceanographic principles, theories, and practices sufficient to review and analyze data is required.
  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications, and Google’s Collaboration Suite (e.g., Docs, Sheets, and Slides) for analyzing data and developing and editing documents and presentations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team, are required.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action.
