Remuneration: This role is unremunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed.
The appointment is for a three-year term, which can be renewed twice at the discretion of the Board.
Time Requirements: Minimally, 10 days per annum

UKCEH is looking for an experienced Non-Executive Director to join our team of talented individuals, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights, and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

As a newly formed trading subsidiary of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), UKCEH International Ltd., aims to advance science in international terrestrial and aquatic environments, including their interactions with the atmosphere.
UKCEH International has been established to support the growth of UKCEH’s international activities through the development of international partnerships and delivery of our presence outside of the UK. Headquartered in the UK, a branch of UKCEH International is currently being established in Ghana, West Africa.
A Non-Executive Director is sought to inform UKCEH International’s strategic direction and support its development and growth, thereby facilitating the ambitions of the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. As a Member of the UKCEH International Board you will provide guidance on the setup of our first international office in Accra, Ghana, and the potential scoping of other offices around the world.
You will have a sound working knowledge of the requirements of Non-Executive Directors, including setting the strategic direction of the company, monitoring performance, financial accountability and ensuring effective risk management. As well as a robust and relevant international network, we are seeking candidates with the following experience and skills.
Experience:
- Proven senior leadership experience and knowledge of effective governance in multinational/complex organisations in the private, public, or voluntary sectors, preferably with board-level experience as an executive or non-executive.
- A record of accomplishment of strategic leadership in the creation of new income generating opportunities internationally, in areas relevant to UKCEH’s research, products, and services.
- An interest in international environmental issues, transboundary science, and/or international development.
- Demonstrable experience of establishing and sustaining effective relationships to achieve organisational objectives, including building business partnerships relevant to UKCEH’s international opportunities.
- A proven record of accomplishment of sound judgement, strategic thinking, and effective decision-making.
- Impartiality, an ability to respect confidences and evidential commitment to promoting the values of an organisation.
Knowledge, skills and understanding:
- An understanding of international corporate governance and operations.
- Knowledge and understanding of the markets where UKCEH International could be active including developing and emerging markets and economies.
- The ability to apply knowledge strategically, think creatively and keep mission focussed.
- Commitment to the organisation and a willingness and availability to devote the necessary time and effort.
- Strong independent judgement and strategic vision.
- Able to analyse and understand complex issues and make systematic and rational judgments based on relevant information.
- Preparedness to consider the range of perspectives and explore alternative outcomes, respecting alternative views and the value of compromise.
- Good understanding of leading major change.
- High calibre communication and the ability to work effectively as a member of a high performing team.
