Job Description

Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) seeks a full-time Oceanographic Technical Specialist II to support National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS). This position will be focused on advancement of the 500m-gridded Coastal Ocean Reanalysis (CORA) model. CO-OPS is the authoritative source for accurate, reliable, and timely tides, water levels, currents, and other coastal oceanographic and meteorological information. Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist CO-OPS with the advancement of the new CORA (Coastal Ocean Reanalysis) hydrodynamic coastal model simulations of water levels and waves for the past 40+ years.
  • Identify new technologies or data sets that may enhance or lead to development of new CO-OPS products using the hydrodynamic model output
  • Evaluate model results against observations, or assess the integration of model output with other products and services.
  • Aid in the development and operationalization of nearshore wave observations, which will support marine navigation, hydrodynamic model development, coastal change forecasts, and the prediction of coastal hazards such as rip currents, storm surge, and wave run-up.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on nearshore water level and wave observations used for model validation
  • Assist with the development of presentations, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications in areas of expertise.
  • Analyze and visualize output from coastal models.

Salary: This is a full-time position. Wage range is $35.00 to $40.00 per hour. Overtime is not anticipated. Comprehensive benefits package.

Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:

  • MS in oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, physics, physical science, geophysics, civil engineering, or a closely related discipline, and two years of relevant experience, or a BS and eight years of relevant experience. General database and query experience and a working knowledge of MATLAB, Python, and/or ArcGIS preferred.

  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications, and Google’s Collaboration Suite (e.g., Docs, Sheets, and Slides) for analyzing data and developing and editing documents and presentations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team, are required.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action.
