The Stevens Nature Center at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is seeking individuals with an interest in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Education and are at least 18 years of age to work in all weather conditions as preserve and nature center staff. Nature Preserve work involves entering accurate program registration data into a computer, processing preserve visitor inquiries, handling general office duties, the care and upkeep of facility and outdoor amenities, as well as trail patrols and the completion of daily and weekly checklists. General natural resource work includes trail maintenance, garden upkeep, and composting. Staff also have the opportunity to research, and implement nature programs for children and families.
Does related work as required. Specific duties may vary depending upon assignment.
Work is performed under regular supervision following regularly established routines subject to more general instructions. Work requires public contact.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Typical Tasks
- Patrols trails to ensure safety of trails and of visitors;
- Prepares and facilitates environmental education programs;
- Serves as instructor for programs each month as needed and interacts with class participants and parents directly;
- Assists with supervising volunteers during volunteer workdays;
- Able to enforce Town of Cary policies and preserve rules and regulations and provides information on rules and regulations, departmental policies, procedures and services in a firm but tactful manner;
- Serves as receptionist at nature center desk, answers telephone, receives citizen complaints and inquiries, and requests for services and provides department information and materials to citizens, or refers to appropriate person;
- Interacts with preserve visitors providing information about local flora, fauna, and addressing patron concerns.
- Performs administrative tasks as needed;
- Performs computer related tasks;
- Performs light maintenance, cleaning, and natural resource management related preserve maintenance.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and programs, following written and oral instructions;
- Proactively identifies facility and preserve needs and suggests solutions;
- Registers the public for programs;
- Coordinates information about programs with other instructors including enrollment and class status;
- Follows through on program cancellations including calling students;
- Maintains customer files, checks entered registrations for accuracy;
- Enters and retrieves information to update records, process transactions, or responds to requests for information;
- Performs basic accounting for money received through the cash register; prepares accurate deposits within established deadlines;
- Opens or/or closes and secures center/preserve daily;
- Follows up with supervisor with oral and written reports;
- Manages special projects;
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of computers and related software; general knowledge of standard office practices and procedures; ability to complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline; skill in the operation of common office equipment; ability to meet the public effectively; ability to communicate effectively; ability to deal with the public in a firm but tactful manner; ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the center and preserve, division and department; ability to maintain filing systems.
Some knowledge of piedmont flora and fauna; ability to provide accurate information about local wildlife; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, some experience with retail sales, some experience with children, some experience with recreational programming. Ability to work independently on assigned projects and programs; good time management skills; the ability to take the initiative when necessary; ability to respond calmly to an emergency situation.
Physical Requirements
An employee must be able to talk, hear, and see. An employee must also be able to move freely in order to visit activity sites and handle equipment. Visual acuity is necessary in order to read and write handwritten and typewritten materials. An employee must be able to perform in inclement weather conditions and walk strenuous trails.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and must be at least 18 years of age.
Proficiency with personal computers and Windows-based programming. Some background in natural resources or natural sciences; public speaking courses and/or experience preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
Requires valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history.
