Full-Time Robotics Engineer, Mechanical Systems
Job Description
Do you want to work with a fast-growing technology startup focused on increasing efficiency in agriculture? Do you want to work with robots and the latest in computer vision and machine learning tech on a daily basis?
Headquartered in Seattle, we are seeking an energetic, hands-on, team-oriented and responsible individual to fill a full-time Mechanical Engineer position as part of our Robotics team. In this role, you will be working with all aspects of iUNU robotic projects across the full product development life cycle, including planning, design, development, testing, field deployment, and fleet monitoring. This position requires an understanding of how to architect a robotic system based on mechanical, electrical, software, controls, and non-technical (ex. customer) requirements and the ability to convert a solid theoretical design into a robust, functional, physical product.
Candidates should be familiar with industry standards of tolerances, materials, and safety requirements of various manufacturing processes, with an emphasis on low-volume fabrication strategies for large products. Additionally, ideal candidates will have an in-depth understanding of designing solutions for harsh industrial environments, taking into account IP ratings for dust and water intrusion, thermal characteristics and behavior, expected loading configurations / vibration exposure, etc.
iUNU’s core values revolve around grit, innovation, and doing the right thing. iUNU’s flat organizational structure lends itself to the person willing to speak their mind and challenge the status quo in order to fulfill the ultimate mission of delivering the best possible solutions to our grower customers.
About You
You are excited to work with us to create a more profitable, more productive, and safer agricultural supply chain. You embrace learning and feedback and feel comfortable in a respectful, open environment. You have the ability to put together solid robotics designs and see them through to physical assemblies. You take ownership and responsibility for your projects and are able to work with others to create solutions for difficult problems.
You continually work on learning and improving your mechanical engineer skill set in a robotics environment. You’re looking for a place where you can learn from talented mentors and at the same time make significant contributions to the team and overall organization. You’re able to take initiative in a startup environment where challenges are common and clarity of communication is critical.
Responsibilities
- Constantly raise the bar for the mechanical components of our robots and hardware installations with a focus on reliability, safety, and consistency
- Identify and manage opportunities to improve manufacturing (in-house and contracted) with respect to cost, timeliness, and quality, making the appropriate recommendations and tradeoffs as necessary
- Author, maintain, and approve engineering drawings, build processes, and acceptance criteria, and continually improve Quality Assurance and Quality Compliance
- Be aware of design strengths and weaknesses while iterating on abstractions to ensure lean and reusable components with respect to our hardware design
- Closely work with Application Engineering and Technical Product Managers to efficiently size, groom, and prioritize work items in an Agile Scrum environment
- Troubleshoot, triage, and fix production issues and design or manufacturing related problems rapidly
- Participate in accelerated testing of components for determining MTBF, lifespan, maintenance cycles and the associated acceptance criteria based upon business needs

- Solid understanding and application of principles, concepts, theories, and techniques in mechanical engineering
- Experience converting non-technical inputs into hard product requirements and finally into the right solution for the customer
- Ability to quickly turn a finalized design into a physical prototype by producing engineering drawings, sourcing suppliers, working through procurement challenges, and leading final assembly on compressed timelines
- Ability to write clear and comprehensive technical documentation
- Leadership skills
- Detail-oriented with excellent critical thinking, communication, and time management skills
- Data-driven problem-solving skills to troubleshoot, triage, and fix mechanical, electrical, and software issues within production, design, and manufacturing
