Job Description

The Material Development Engineer will be a highly skilled and accomplished member of the Material Development group of United States Steel Research. This individual will be part of the team tasked with developing state-of-the-art steel products to keep U. S. Steel competitive in the steel industry. Laboratory based investigations will be conducted to develop new grades and to increase our knowledge of both new and existing grades. Recommendations will be made for material designs that include both steel composition and processing using existing manufacturing facilities as well as new or upgraded facilities. Process knowledge and experience will be gained through interaction with manufacturing operations, with strong emphasis on metallurgical interactions and microstructure development during hot-strip mill rolling and subsequent controlled cooling processes. Initial assignments will involve working closely with steel process simulation equipment and models in the laboratory (e.g., Gleeble, Dilatometry, JMatPro, Thermocalc) to gain a detailed understanding of steel behavior during hot processing. Immediate interaction with Hot Strip Mill manufacturing units is expected to fulfill responsibilities. Prior experience and knowledge of hot strip mill processing of low alloy steel is a strong positive, especially if it includes mini-mill configurations. Job responsibilities will require strong engagement with staff members encompassing a wide range of multidisciplinary skills that will demand excellent teamwork and a focus on effective communication.
