Marketing Director

Department: Marketing, Cultural Engagement
Contract type: Fixed Term Contract until approximately June 2026 (Two years).
Pay band:LMFGs, Starting from £77,031 plus £3,300 London market allowance, for those based in the London Area only.

The Role:

 

This is an exciting opportunity to take up the role of Marketing Director, within Cultural Engagement on a two year fixed term contact.

 

You will play a proactive role in the development of the business unit (e.g. business planning, product portfolio mapping and partnership marketing), along with ensuring that customer and market insight underpin decision-making, and for driving up and aligning marketing processes and standards to drive awareness, understanding and engagement with the British Council brand.

As Marketing Director, you will oversee the delivery of efficient and effective world-class marketing and communications to drive the growth, reach, impact, reputation and financial sustainability of the CE business, by:

•    Helping the business to secure new funding by communicating the impact of our work and our unique role, approach and track record
•    Driving up engagement in our offers and opportunities through insight-led campaigns to professional sectors
•    Promoting the breadth of UK and international culture, creativity and education to audiences globally, including acting as SRO for the GREAT Study UK campaign
•    Informing business strategy and programme development through global marketing approaches.

 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Provide strategic support and internal consultancy to Sector leads and marketing teams in developing global marketing strategies and plans that encompass the portfolios across the funding streams and reflects business plan aspirations.
  • Develop and deliver the global Cultural Engagement marketing strategy through effective matrix working, and marketing campaigns.
  • Engage proactively with senior leaders and leadership teams in ways that actively support CE to work as one high performing team  and for Global Marketing to act as one team.
  • Collaborate with regional business and sector leaders to identify and articulate emerging market trends and demands.
  • Ensure professional marketing processes, tools and disciplines exist to support growth and professional delivery of the current and emerging portfolio cost-effectively.
  • Provide direction, quality assurance and impact assessment of the global CE marketing portfolio, working with colleagues to monitor and evaluate impact against agreed KPIs.
  • Lead on the development of speculative client engagement, demand generation, product portfolio mapping and product management for Cultural Engagement.
  • Manage effective positioning for CE’s sectors and programmes that is guided by and consistent with the corporate brand and backed up by credentials and insights gathered from across the portfolio of work.
  • Support the development of bids / business cases, determining budget required for related marketing and events activity and resources to deliver.
  • Develop a marketing resource model that ensures flexible and cost-effective access to professional skills throughout the marketing lifecycle.
  • Develop the global marketing plan, agreeing and monitoring resources and budgets for delivery of the plan at global, regional and country levels.  Agree and monitor resources, costs and budgets for delivery maximising ROI across marketing and between contracts
  •  Develop and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support business objectives and to build the British Council brand.
  • Distil complex concepts and analysis into cogent and persuasive business case presentations, which convincingly influence decision-makers about the need for significant changes to policy or practice
  • Work effectively as a member of the Global Marketing Leadership team to ensure an insight and audience-led approach to strategies and plans.
  •  Play an active role on the CE Executive team alongside programme and sector leads to ensure a clear and agreed programme of marketing activity aligned to the business programming cycle.

 

Requirements of the role:

 

  • Considerable experience in an organisational marketing leadership role in a large, complex global organisation, covering multiple markets in relevant geographical areas.
  • Understanding of international development and some knowledge of Arts, Education and/or English content areas
  • Leading teams within a global matrix structure to deliver planned outcomes.
  • Developing and managing relationships with senior stakeholders
