About the Position
NBI is seeking a Market Engagement Manager to become an integral part of the NBI organization. The position requires a motivated self-starter with strong organizational and analytical capabilities as well as the ability to communicate complicated topics in a manner that builds knowledge among targeted audiences. This position will support collaborations with our growing number of partners to ensure effective communication and relationship management. NBI is focused on improving the performance of residential, commercial, and multifamily buildings; successful candidates will have market knowledge of building energy performance, policy strategies, advanced technologies and design and the resulting benefits to occupants and the environment.
Responsibilities
NBI’s efforts are grounded in strong technical research and analysis and communicating to the various market actors the policies and practices that are driving a healthy and efficient built environment. This position supports our efforts to advance the net zero energy and carbon neutral buildings market in all sectors. Responsibilities include the following:
- Cultivate and maintain client and stakeholder relationships, as well as connections with industry organizations.
- Participate and lead local, regional, and national group meetings regarding energy and carbon emissions in the built environment
- Facilitate transfer and integration of NBI-developed tools and information to stakeholder groups and clients.
- With direction from senior staff, oversee the management of assigned projects:
- Create and implement an engagement plan;
- Coordinate among staff on delivery of memorandum of understanding scopes and outcomes;
- Support development and management of budgets;
- Identify and solve problems during project implementation and delivery;
- Ensure efficient and cost- effective use of project resources.
- Provide insights on market trends and needs, and conduct market research and analysis, if necessary.
- Manage delivery of educational programming and presentations in a professional and polished manner.
- Support program efforts in the development and delivery of communications assets and releases of reports, guidance, presentations, and other promotions to critical stakeholders.
- Support business development with sponsorship and contract proposal scoping, writing and delivery.
- Contribute to a positive work environment for staff.
Qualifications
Required
The Market Engagement Manager is a mid-level position that requires a technical understanding of energy and carbon in buildings and has the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of five years of professional experience working in energy efficiency, utility program implementation or green building consulting services.
- Knowledge of advanced building energy codes, policies, and programs
- Understanding of market transformation theory, approaches, and implementation.
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships, sponsorships and/or partnerships with a range of government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations.
- Project management, group facilitation, and leadership experience.
- Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to perform under pressure, work with a wide variety of constituents and meet deadlines.
- Exceptionally strong writing and presentation skills, including public speaking.
- Proficiency in MS SharePoint, Teams, Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Good sense of humor and a collaborative work spirit.
- Approach to work that is positive, solution-oriented, optimistic, and enthusiastic.
- Eagerness to serve the public interest.
- An ability to go with the flow in a fast-paced, high-energy organization is a key to success in this job.
Desired
- Graphics capabilities particularly in creating PowerPoint decks
- Media relations experience.
- Experience writing winning proposals and other business development support.
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Experience in effectively managing staff and volunteers.
Details
This position is a full-time, exempt position. NBI’s office in downtown Portland, Oregon. Applicants outside the Portland area will be considered. NBI is involved in projects all over the United States, and occasional travel will be expected as part of the position (travel has been suspended due to COVID-19). Travel expenses are reimbursed.

Additionally, NBI offers the following for this position:
- Salary range: $60,000 – $72,000 (depending on experience and possibly location)
- Insurance benefits (100% of employee only premiums paid by NBI; new hires are eligible the first of the month after 30 days of employment) include: Medical, vision & dental, Life, AD&D, and Long-Term Disability insurance.
- 160 hours of accrued PTO (combined vacation and sick for a full year)
- 11 paid holidays
