Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) are actively recruiting for Maritime Safety and/or Environmental Practitioners who are really looking to make a difference, as intelligent decision makers, integral to supporting our armed forces.
You could have the opportunity to work across the varied Defence Maritime portfolio, which includes the Royal Navy Surface Ship or Submarine Flotilla, or the Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships. You will work to provide safety support to teams throughout the equipment and platform acquisition lifecycle, which may span requirement setting in the concept phase and overseeing the design of our new build ships and submarines, through to in-service support of our current platforms and their eventual disposal.
If deployed into DE&S, you can expect to be assigned to a specific platform Class, for example, our Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft carriers, Type 45 Destroyers or Mine Countermeasure vessels, or to a portfolio of equipment or systems, for example our Maritime Electronic Warfare programme or other Maritime Combat Systems team.
If you are deployed into SDA, you can expect to be assigned to a specific Class of Submarines, for example our Dreadnought or Vanguard Class ballistic missile submarines, or our Astute or Trafalgar class attack submarines, or to a portfolio of equipment or systems, for example our submarine Combat Systems team.
Your valuable knowledge will be used in each application to support safety decision-making, working closely in a team of engineers, and with front line commands to help manage risks to our service men and women and to the environment.
Please note that roles available with SDA may require that candidates are Sole UK nationals due to the nature of the projects involved.
Responsibilities
As a Maritime Safety and/or Environmental Practitioner, you will work to establish, implement and maintain appropriate Safety & Environmental Systems through the application of DE&S and SDA policy.
Duties may include:
• Interpreting and applying safety and environmental policy for the design and support of platforms and equipment
• Managing Safety & Environmental Cases
• Generating Safety & Environmental Case Reports and undertaking risk assessments
• Identifying opportunities for improvements and delivering against these
• Setting up, running and maintaining safety and environmental systems at project level, as well as overseeing and mitigating risks
• Implementing safety and environment management systems and monitoring their effectiveness through governance and assurance
• Managing a team to deliver safety and environmental outputs
• Providing advice and support with colleagues, ensuring that appropriate safety and environmental requirements are correctly applied and delivered in contracts, as well as managing contractors who perform safety management activities on behalf of DE&S / SDA.
• You may be required to act as a specialist member or secretariat of Safety & Environmental Panels and Committees.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A minimum of Level 4 qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline, or equivalent working experience
• Knowledge and experience in the implementation of a Safety and/or Environmental Management System, noting that this is a systems safety role and not OHSE.
• Experience of constructing safety arguments or Safety & Environmental Cases in a relevant field, which may include Maritime or other high-hazard industry, such as Automotive, Aviation, Process or Petrochemical
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience in any of the following broad Safety & Environmental skills would be advantageous: Hazard Log Management, Hazard Identification and Analysis using recognised techniques, Risk Assessment and ALARP justifications, Safety and environmental management across the lifecycle from Concept to Disposal, Safety Audit, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Derivation and Assessment or Software Safety Assessment, use of Safety & Environmental Tools e.g. Goal Structuring Notation (GSN), Best Available Technique, BPEO, etc.
• Working knowledge of Defence Maritime safety and environmental policy and regulation, for example, the Defence Safety Authority regulations, specifically DSA02-DMR, the Naval Ships Code (ANEP-77), and Classification Society Rules and Regulations for Ship Design. Also working knowledge of defence safety and environmental standards, for example Def-Stan 00-056 or 00-051.
• Experience of working in, or working knowledge of Maritime safety and environmental regulations and policy, in either a civil or Defence application.
• Professional recognition achieved through appropriate membership of an engineering, science or safety/environmental institution
