The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Marine Mechanic to join our Cedar Island/Ocracoke Operations team to maintain and repair diesel engines and other marine equipment.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Perform work ranging from general, routine assignments to moderately complexity requiring marine mechanical knowledge acquired through on-the-job training dealing with ferry vessels.
    • Have overnight travel to work in Ocracoke on a rotation basis.
    • Repair and overhaul diesel engines involving the disassembly, inspection and reassembly of valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears and chains, valve mechanisms, injectors, and pumps.
    • Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches, and couplings.
    • Replace propeller shafts and bearings and align them to the engines.
    • Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps, and hydraulic pumps.
    • Use bench grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, and pneumatic tools.
    • Operate horizontal milling machines, lathes, radial arm drill presses, and hydraulic presses.
    • Read, understand, and use blueprints.
    • Use common cutting tools in machining, such as HSS, brazed carbides, and carbide inserts.
    • Read conversion charts of fraction to decimal and standard to metric units.
    • Use measuring instruments, such as dial calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, radius gauges, and telescoping gauges.
 
What You Bring
    • Working knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines.
    • Knowledge of the operating principles of reduction gears and hydraulic systems, air and electric control systems, and vacuum and pressure pumps.
    • Demonstrated ability to determine the causes of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment.
 
Education & Experience
    • High school/GED diploma, and
    • 3+ years experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  
Notes
    • You will generally works shift work on a 7 days on and 7 days off schedule, but it may be altered at management’s discretion as well as assignment of routine daily duties.
    • When working the night shift, you will be paid a 10% shift premium (10%)!
