Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Manager, Trust and Safety (Policy) to join our team, reporting to the Global Head of Trust & Safety. The Manager, Trust and Safety (Policy) holds responsibility for overseeing the Policy staff in the Legal Trust and Safety department. On an ongoing basis, the manager will identify areas of challenge in community resilience and sustainability and work to identify and implement policy and program solutions through collaboration with their policy team, communities, and appropriate staff. In current focus, the Trust and Safety Policy Manager will develop the team of trust and safety policy professionals in the Foundation, support the team’s implementation of the Wikimedia movement’s Universal Code of Conduct across the ecosystem, and help guide the adaptation of the Foundation’s platforms trust and safety policies to changing regulatory environments.

Policy experts under the manager’s supervision lead the Universal Code of Conduct project, work on policy issues affecting governance of the platform, and are tasked with supporting several key community functionary groups charged with community resilience-relevant subjects such as volunteer peer support groups. Policy staff collaborate with the Trust and Safety Operations team, led by the Senior Manager, Legal Trust Safety Operations, to maintain and staff the system in place to deal with threats of suicide and violence on Foundation projects and, as needed and available, assist that group in evaluating reactive or incident-based reports of harassment, safe spaces violations or similar concerns.

You are responsible for:

  • Managing the Wikimedia Foundation’s Trust & Safety Policy team, including advocating for the team’s development and its needs. Skillfully mentoring staff to improve their skills.
  • Ensuring departmental excellence through close collaboration with the Global Head of Trust and Safety, the Vice President of Community Resilience and Sustainability, the General Counsel, and other departmental team leaders in planning and resourcing departmental and cross-departmental initiatives impacting Trust and Safety Policy.
  • Coordinating cross-departmentally to realize opportunities and enhance organizational impact.
  • Participating as a member of the Trust and Safety management team in planning and resourcing portfolio-wide objectives.
  • Remaining aware of and sensitive to community resilience and sustainability; working to identify challenges and opportunities as well as implement solutions through collaboration with communities and appropriate staff.
  • Partnering with the Senior Trust and Safety Operations Manager to maintain and staff the systems surrounding threats of violence to self and others on Wikimedia Foundation projects, including liaising with law enforcement officials as necessary in investigating and resolving incidents
  • Communicating with key stakeholders in a precise, detailed or high-level communication style, depending on the needs of the organization and communities.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and desire to help others learn and grow.
  • Proven experience effectively managing cross-departmental initiatives and multiple content or platform policy projects in a rapidly changing environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to synthesize complex topics and create compelling narratives for various audiences
  • Proven experience using both social and technical approaches to support the enhancement of online community interactions and dynamics

Additionally, we would love you to have:

  • Experience with free knowledge/open source communities
  • Intellectually curious; a level of openness to collaboration and new ideas
  • Experience working with diverse communities 
  • Command of additional languages, especially Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, Russian or Spanish, is seen as a plus.
