Full-Time Manager- Technical Accounting & External Reporting

Job Description

U. S. Steel Corporation has an opening for a Manager – Technical Accounting and External Reporting in its Pittsburgh headquarters location. The Manager of Technical Accounting and External Reporting, reporting to the Director of Technical Accounting and Policies, serves as a leader of the Controller’s organization and collaborates daily with leaders and colleagues across the business and other functional teams to facilitate successful achievement of organizational goals in accordance with U.S. GAAP. This includes providing continuous education, both formal and informal, to stakeholders across the organization. The Manager – Technical Accounting and External Reporting is responsible for providing appropriate U.S. GAAP accounting treatment for U. S. Steel global transactions, preparation and review of information related to benefits accounting and actuarial valuation processes, including pension and OPEB valuations, and support of the preparation of all quarterly and annual financial statements and footnotes for SEC filings, earnings releases, and government reports; preparation and analysis of the monthly cash flow statements, earnings per share calculations and implementation of new accounting standards throughout the global company.

The primary responsibilities of the Manager – Technical Accounting and External Reporting are:
• Provide consultation and execution support to the U. S. Steel executives and various functional areas on complex events and transactions.
• Monitor and analyze proposed rule changes, manage adoption projects and initiatives as applicable.
• Actively participate in strategic projects related to the issuance and redemption of debt, acquisitions and divestitures, treasury activity and other corporate strategic initiatives.
• Manage complex accounting areas such as pensions, insurable liabilities, asbestos, and stock-based compensation, etc.
• Manage the purchase accounting process for completed acquisitions.
• Provide consultation support for day-to–day questions on accounting and reporting. Develop appropriate guidance by analyzing data and assumptions, formulate positions/alternatives and communicate the recommended course of action.
• Participate in the assumption setting process for the valuation of the pension, other postemployment benefits (OPEB) and worker’s compensation plans.
• Aid in the review and preparation of U. S. Steel’s benefit plan financial statements and Form 5500s.
• Ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Also develop, interpret, and maintain properly detailed accounting policies and procedures.
• Complete and review technical disclosures within Forms 8-K, 10-Q and 10-K SEC filings by partnering with the Director of External Reporting.
• Work effectively with the Independent Auditors and third-party valuation firms.
• Prepare accounting memos outlining the accounting treatment of U. S. Steel transactions.
• Manage and support the development of direct reports within the Technical Accounting group, along with colleagues throughout the organization, as applicable.

REQUIRED:
• Candidates must have a Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance, with a minimum of 8-10 years of accounting experience in a public entity or public accounting.
• MBA or CPA certification required.
• Candidates must have strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills and be able to lead professionals in a team-based and performance-oriented environment.
• Strong U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting knowledge and experience.
• Candidate should be able to effectively communicate with all levels of management and functions throughout the organization both verbally and in writing.
• Candidate needs to be able to work effectively in a team environment and in building collaborative relationships with peers and key stakeholders across the global organization.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
• Experience with Oracle and Hyperion Financial
• Management is a plus.
