Full-Time Manager, Development and Communications

Job Description

Friends of Ruby is dedicated to the journey and well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, aged 16-29 through mental health services, social services, and housing. Friends of Ruby offers Youth Mental Health services, a Youth Drop-In Centre, and a Transitional Home. The Centre provides access to barrier-free counselling and therapeutic groups, case management and a drop-in space with hot meals, community, and comprehensive programming. The Home provides transitional and emergency housing, mental health, and life-skills to support youth moving towards independent living.

Position Summary

The Manager, Development and Communications (Manager) will be a vital member of the Development and Communications team. This role reports to the Director, Development and Communications (Director, D&C), and requires close collaboration with diverse internal teams, including Mental Health and Youth Services, Finance, and other stakeholder groups. Contributing to the overall fundraising and communications strategies and goals, the Manager will be leading a team of fundraising and communications professionals with accountability to key activities such as annual fundraising campaigns, internal and external communications, donor engagement activities, and other special projects.

Compensation: $75,000 – $85,000

Duties and Responsibilites

Leadership:

  • Support the Director, D&C in the strategic planning of the department.
  • Hiring, supervision and performance management of department staff, ensuring continuous learning and professional development.
  • Work with staff to ensure individual and team targets have been met in accordance with fundraising and communications priorities and metrics.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and act as an ambassador for FoR at events and meetings, with proven experience collaborating with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Contribute to departmental reporting needs, whether internal or external
  • Work in partnership with FoR senior leadership on staff engagement, major donor relationships, proposal development and approval, and stewardship activities.

Development:

  • Be responsible for a portfolio of key individual and corporate donors/prospects (approximately 10-20).
  • Establish, monitor, maintain, and track business processes that support Fundraising, grant deliverables, constituent relationship management (CRM) and donor stewardship.
  • Manage timely and quality briefing materials, executive summaries, and presentations for key fundraising activities.
  • Support the execution of donor events.

Communications:

  • Develop and execute communications and marketing plans to support business development and revenue- generating strategies and/or activities, while penetrating new donor markets.
  • Drive content development and maintenance across digital and print platforms, with a focus on consistency and quality, through the supervision of and collaboration with the Communications Officer.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistency of messaging and brand presence.
  • Build external relationships with media outlets, government agencies, community stakeholders, and donors.

  • Oversee internal communications strategies, including organizational and program specific strategies to ensure the activities and its programs are effectively communicated and promoted to diverse audiences and groups.
  • Work with the senior leadership team to identify and implement multiple, modern ways of communicating with staff across the organization, with program participants and residents, donors and third parties as needed.

Internal/External Relationships:

  • Report to the Director, Development and Communications.
  • Direct Reports include:
    • Development Officer, Annual Giving and Stewardship Programs;
    • Donor Communications (Granting Program);
    • Communications Officer;
    • New hires to the team.

Job Requirements

 

  • Satisfactory clearance under the Vulnerable Sector Police Check Program.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
  • Working a hybrid model, 3 days per week onsite, in downtown Toronto. The current hybrid model may be subject to change, considering business needs and responsibilities.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional organizational needs, including evening and/or weekend work.
  • Ability to travel to other community-based settings as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of fundraising and communication experience.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record in crafting effective solicitation and stewardship communications.
  • Knowledge, allyship , and lived experience within the diversity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
  • Experience working with diverse teams and promoting a positive brand image.
  • Ability to build long-term relationships with donors using tact, discretion, and compassion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional diverse teams and prioritize tasks in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Desired asset of experience working for a social service, mental health, and/or housing organization.
  • A champion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion & ARAO, including but not limited to:
    • Demonstrated ability to navigate and communicate effectively in a diverse range of environments, cultures, and people.
    • understanding of the broader social and cultural contexts impacting DEI efforts.

Location: Downtown Toronto, Ontario with potential option to work remotely part-time as operational needs allow.
