Temporary Major and Planned Gifts Officer
Job Description
Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Seeking innovative professionals from diverse backgrounds to fill the Major and Planned Gifts Officer position to join the Institutional Advancement and Alumni Engagement team.
Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Engagement, the Major and Planned Gift Officer plays a key role in executing a robust major gifts program at Elmira College. The Officer will qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective major and planned gift donors. The primary focus will be on engaging prospects resulting in gifts in the five – seven figure range. The Officer will also collaborate with the VP and AVP of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Engagement to ensure continued and increased effectiveness in our engagement programs for major and planned gifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Major Gifts:
- Initiate contacts with potential major gift and planned gift donors;
- Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for donors, including working with volunteers;
- Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure;
- Write proposals and make solicitations;
- Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors;
- Travel to and visit prospective major donors and other key constituents;
- Solicit and closes major gifts in the five, six, and seven-figure range primarily for unrestricted support, student scholarships, athletic programs, and campus improvements;
- Prepare contact reports and proposals in Raiser’s Edge to manage assigned prospects;
- Attend alumni and College events when requested.
Planned Gifts:
- Responsible for qualifying, cultivating, visiting, and securing planned giving prospects for Estate gifts, Charitable Remainder Unitrusts and Annuity Trusts, Charitable Gift Annuities, Life Insurance Gifts, and Real Estate Gifts;
- Work closely with AVP of Institutional Advancement regarding bi-monthly planned giving articles for alumni and planned giving communications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred;
- At least 15 years of increasingly responsible, administrative experience in advancement and development;
- Ability to analyze and interpret data;
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to travel and possess valid driver’s license;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn the donor database software system (Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud).
WORK LOCATION: Remote position in the New England region (MA, CT, RI, VT, NH).

BASIS OF PAY: Salary, Exempt

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in a remote, off-campus office environment with frequent public contact. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach, and twist; to carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; ability to travel frequently and have a valid driver’s license.
