The Challenge
We are looking for a Maintenance/Construction Technician to join our Ferry Maintenance team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Perform skilled work specializing in at least one trade related to the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings, facilities, and associated systems.
    • Serve as an entry- to journey-level skilled trades person in an area such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC.
    • Work on moderately-complex projects based on Ferry’s needs.
    • Conduct safety inspections of facility infrastructure.
    • Perform siding and roofing repairs, flooring installation, exterior and interior lighting, ferry ramp electrical issue troubleshooting and repair, concrete work, painting, lock/door handle replacement, HVAC troubleshooting and repair, plumbing repairs, and design and construction of basic structures.
    • Perform Facility Inspections: Fire extinguishers, first aid kits and eye wash stations, AEDs, overhead cranes, overhead doors, emergency lights, fire suppression system components, spill kits, and HVAC units.
    • Conduct electrical maintenance: repairs, replacement or installation of conduit (Ridged, PVC, EMT) wire, disconnect switches, fuses, receptacle’s, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, circuit breakers, climate control systems, variable frequency devises, printed circuit control boards, load centers, transformers, generators, motors, electronic controllers, electronic key systems, shore receptacles and power cords, Work involves the skilled use of harmonics testers, amp meters, ohmmeters, and voltmeters. Works with National Electrical Code.
    • Manage HVAC maintenance and repairs: Repair, replacement or installation of hot water heating and air conditioning. Work involves the skilled use of airflow meters, humidity recorders, voltmeters and ohmmeters, refrigerant gages and scales, braising using oxygen and acetylene and related tools. Works with applicable codes, NFPA, IBC, UBC, BOCA, NRC and NEC.
    • Perform carpentry work: repair, construction and renovation of offices, workshops and storage facilities. Work includes framing, tile work, carpet installation, roof replacements, drywall repair and installation, trim work, siding installation, reading, and following blueprints, design drawing schematics. Work involves the skilled use of levels, sanders, pneumatic hammers, table saws, scroll saws, squares, circular saws, drills. Works with applicable state building codes.
    • Perform Plumbing: Repair, installation or replacement of faucets, sinks, toilets, urinals, water lines, water heaters, water dispensing plumbing fixtures, washing machines, circulating pumps, submersible pumps and fire suppression lines. Work involves the skilled use of PVC, pex, ductile iron, copper lines, cutting and threading pipe and related tools. Works with applicable NC Plumbing Code.
    • Conduct Water and Wastewater System Maintenance: Collect samples per permit conditions, operate systems per permit conditions, make necessary repairs to ensure continued functionality and to remain in compliance with permit conditions, work with management in planning for major system upgrades, overhauls and replacements.  
What You Bring
    • Willingness to learn various trades.
    • Basic organizational, planning, and administrative skills that may be refined as you progress towards higher-level positions with added responsibility.
    • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of maintenance and a trade used in this position.
    • Skill in the safe use and care of tools/equipment used in this role.
    • Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of assigned trades (electrical, HVAC or Plumbing)
    • Working knowledge of general maintenance and building repair
    • Demonstrated ability to operate shop or woodworking equipment.
 
Education & Experience
    • High School/GED diploma; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience in mechanical/building trades.
 
Notes
    • Work hours are Mon through Fri 7AM to 3:30PM.
    • Overnight travel is not regular, but will be necessary for certain projects.
    • This position reports directly to our Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
    • Your initial assignments will involve regular oversight/training from more experienced Maintenance Technicians.
    • We may require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal Technician.
