Job Description
Woodbury University invites applications for a Participating Adjunct Faculty to join the Library Reference and Instruction team. Under the general direction of the University Librarian, participating adjunct library faculty teach a one-credit information literacy course, provide reference and research assistance, and may serve as subject specialist/library liaison to an academic department. Expected start date is July 2022.
Responsibilities
- Teach credit-bearing courses in Library and Information Science (LSCI).
- Syllabus and class preparation
- Instruction during scheduled course times
- Availability to students for consultation and assistance as needed outside of class
- Evaluation of student performance (e.g., grading papers, exams, projects, juries)
- Regular evaluation of students’ work, including prompt communication of performance on assignments
- Submission of final grades to the Registrar’s Office, which is currently completed via Woodbury University Self- Service
- Provide reference and in-depth research assistance to students, faculty, and staff at a public service desk and/or online.
- Provide instruction and assistance to customers in the use of the Library’s equipment, catalogs, databases, public website, internet, and/or computer software applications; troubleshoots equipment issues.
- Provide classroom and online instruction in the library’s course integrated information literacy program. Develop and present library instructional programs for classes in liaison departments, and others as assigned.
- Participate in collection development and maintenance for one or more academic disciplines or departments such as Business or Architecture
- Act as a liaison to faculty, students, and staff in departments as assigned.
- Serve as back for the circulation service desk: Perform full range of circulation/public service desk duties (e.g. checking materials in and out, renewing materials, inspecting materials, processing holds.
- Interpret, communicate, and apply the Library’s policies and procedures; address and assist in resolving customer concerns, incidents and complaints.
- May supervise student employees.
- May be responsible for opening/closing the library.
- Special projects or assignments may include committee service, participation in strategic planning, writing reports or statistics gathering, display or event coordination.
We ask all faculty members to assess students’ work early and often with a minimum of three written assessments for the semester. Your class may be designated as a Core Competency assessment course, in which case you will be required to submit course work and align your content with University rubrics. You may also need to meet periodically with your supervisor during the academic term regarding matters related to your employment.
Requirements
- Masters Degree from an ALA-accredited institution in Library and Information Science or equivalent foreign degree (degree-in-progress may be considered)
- Strong interest in instruction or information literacy.
- A strong interest in library public service
- Experience with print and electronic reference resources
- Familiarity in the use of Library Management Systems software for materials circulation and patron management.
- Demonstrated computer literacy and the ability to effectively assist patrons with library technology.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
- Ability to work with students, faculty, and the general public.
- Must be able to work independently, exercise good judgment and apply departmental policies accurately and consistently.
- Experience managing class rosters, attendance, timely grading of assignments.
- Able to provide critical, informed, and creative feedback to students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an academic library
- Awareness and engagement with critical concerns in the field of librarianship
- Teaching experience
Compensation and Benefits
This appointment is for part-time employment and includes eligibility to participate in medical plans, 403(b) supplemental plan, and access to the tuition-remission benefit on a proportional basis. Eligibility is after 30 days of service on the first of the following month.
