Film Reference Library

The Film Reference Library (FRL)  is dedicated to preserving Canadian cinema heritage and promoting cinema scholarship by collecting, preserving, and providing access to a comprehensive collection of reference resources, as well as film and archival materials. The Library is free, open to the public, and a popular destination for movie lovers, filmmakers, students, researchers, screenwriters, and film and television professionals.

Reporting to the Collections and Services Manager, the Library Assistant will provide in-person and virtual reference services to internal and external patrons, complete database management tasks, and catalogue library materials in support of departmental goals and objectives. Includes administrative tasks related to the operations of the library reference desk such as collecting user and technical stats, working in close collaboration with Library Clerk, and collection maintenance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide reference services in-person and by phone, e-mail, and web, including consultation and research assistance to students, educators, scholars, and members of the public
  • Use MIMSY XG Database as a resource in providing reference services
  • Catalogue reference materials in a variety of formats (monographs, DVD, Blu-ray, periodicals, etc)
  • Maintenance and care of the collection: shelving, research and subject file maintenance, file cleanup tasks (OFI cards, subject file creation, backlog of file tasks)
  • Complete reference purchases as approved by Collections Manager 
  • Oversee reference desk supplies purchases
  • Collate monthly and annual technical and user stats
  • Track donation inquiries for FRL team
  • Assist Collections Manager in creating FRL pop-up displays in TBLB
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

CONTRACT DATES:

  • February 28, 2022 – March 10, 2023

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1+ years experience working in a library and archive circulation or reference desk environment
  • Completion of or Masters degree in Library or Information Science (MLIS) or Technical equivalent; or, currently completing a relevant MLIS professional programme.
  • Demonstrated experience working with library systems software/collections management software, and Excel 
  • Demonstrated experience working in library circulation 
  • Knowledgeable in Canadian film and media history an asset, with a preference for a candidate with a demonstrated cultural competency in one or multiple areas of Indigenous, Black, South Asian, East Asian, LGBTQ+ film and media 
  • Demonstrated experience in providing high quality public services
  • Supervisory experience an asset
  • Previous experience in a schedule-driven, project-based environment with emphasis on timelines
  • Adaptable to a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, or remote work
