Description
Definition
Under direction, performs and leads skilled, complex custodial and facility maintenance duties including coordinating campus-wide custodial and maintenance services required to maintain buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition and troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment; trains, assigns, and schedules the work of custodial staff and provides work direction and guidance; surveys buildings and grounds for hazards, needed repairs, and vandalism; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of a department supervisor and/or manager.
Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but serves as a lead worker to provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.
Work Schedule
40 Hours/Week, 12 Months/Year
Tuesday – Saturday 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Start Date: January 7, 2025

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.
• Performs and leads skilled, complex custodial and facility maintenance tasks including coordinating campus-wide custodial and maintenance services required to maintain buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition and troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
• Provides work direction to custodial staff on procedures, processes, approved methods of custodial work, usage of equipment, and safe work practices including assigning and inspecting their work.
• Surveys buildings and grounds for hazards, needed repairs, and vandalism, and reports findings to the department supervisor.
• Maintains and prepares reports of custodial activities, inventory, training, and maintenance tasks.
• Requests, audits, and maintains an inventory of custodial supplies and equipment.
• Recommends solutions for care and cleaning problems and supply or equipment needs.
• Recommends new custodial products and equipment.
• Performs duties associated with building(s)and room(s)setup for meetings and special events.
• Drives an electric cart to assist in moving tables and other furniture, and other related items as needed.
• May operate a forklift.
• May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees and/or student workers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three (3) years of custodial and maintenance experience, including at least one (1) year leading the work of others.
Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:
None.
Knowledge of
• Materials and equipment used for cleaning.
• Proper use of cleaning disinfectants, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment related to custodial and maintenance work.
• Safe work practices and sanitary regulations in custodial and maintenance work.
• Safe and proper usage and storage of hazardous and toxic substances.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• Recordkeeping procedures.
• Standard office software and modern office equipment.
• Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work.?
• Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
• Principles and practices of customer service.
• Business arithmetic.
Ability to:
• Schedule, assign, and lead the work of others.
• Inspect custodial work and ensure methods are being followed and standards maintained.
• Prepare, and maintain logs and reports relating to custodial services.
• Perform a wide variety of complex custodial and maintenance tasks.
• Read, interpret, and ensure proper usage of material safety data sheets.
• Troubleshoot, use, repair, and maintain cleaning supplies and custodial and maintenance equipment.
• Assemble and move large equipment, furniture, and other items.
• Operate an electric vehicle and forklift.
• Observe and report needed maintenance and repairs.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers.
• Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software).
• Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
• Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others.
• Perform and prioritize multiple tasks.
• Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.
• Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:
The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Mobility: frequent standing for long periods; frequent kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and walking; frequent reaching above and below desk level.
• Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate assigned equipment; grasping to handle tools, individual papers, write and feel individual objects.
• Lifting: frequent lifting of equipment and materials?weighing up to?50?pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds with assistance.
• Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read labels and documents; occasional viewing of computer screens and close-up work.
• Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person, on the telephone, and on a radio.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work typically occurs in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to varied weather conditions and fumes from cleaning chemicals, cleaning agents, and hazardous chemicals.
Work requires the use of potentially hazardous machinery and equipment.

Salary
The Lead Custodian classification salary range is currently R-29.
Starting salary is from $4,791.88 to $5,283.02 per month depending upon education and experience. Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
